mistermullens November 8th, 2011, 12:01 PM Well, I got into playing with a band almost two years ago, and while its not a straight up blues band, my true music love, we do play some in addition to Rock and Country. I told myself that I needed to make two musical goals, and both of those involved playing at two blues clubs here in Atlanta. The first is Fat Matt's Rib Shack and the ultimate would be Blind Willie's. Well, thanks to a friend of mine, who is holding a benefit to raise money for her Mom's medical bills, my ultimate goal will be accomplished. My band, Slideways is playing Blind Willie's on Sunday. I know the club didn't book us, but its happening none the less. I'm pretty excited about it, and unless I get into or start a blues band, this could be the only time playing here, but I'm so excited about it.
I wanted to share because being in a band is hard, and especially hard if not everyone gets along. Reading positive band stories in this forum is always nice, and is not as prevalent as the other stories. Cheers, and thanks for listening!

AJ Love November 8th, 2011, 12:20 PM hey that is fantastic. Congrats! I bet you are gonna have alot of fun playing there
NewOldStock November 8th, 2011, 04:21 PM When I started out I hoped to get good enough to play the song "Wildwood Flower", note for note. That came easy.
Now my dream is to play with Nickelback, but I can't get into Canada due to past criminal histories. Proof that your permanent record really can affect your climb to the top.
TeleTim911 November 8th, 2011, 04:25 PM Congrats on achieving a goal! That's good news.

A working band is a series of compromises most times,a bit like a marriage with all the inevitable ups and downs. Hope the night goes well for you,it's good to have something exciting ahead.
Martin R November 8th, 2011, 05:10 PM Get pictures! Get videos!
Years ago I was asked to accompany a singer at Tipitina's in NOLA...the original before the one in the Quarter was even dreamed of.
I had to drive from Florida for the gig and paid a friend to come along and take pictures. We had pics from the dressing room with the great signatures on the wall, pics out front with the sign, pics backstage and pics of the performance.
I went back to the dressing room after the set only to find my friend sitting in wad of 35mm film...He didn't know how to load the camera and had opened it without rewinding the film. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!
Telesavalis November 8th, 2011, 06:03 PM Cool...knock em out so they'll invite you back!
acalan November 8th, 2011, 06:30 PM Thats great MisterM Let us know how the weekend went. Good luck.Maybe a video?
mistermullens November 8th, 2011, 06:50 PM We are already to prepared to have HD video of the show as well as plenty of pictures. We'll have several guests taking pictures from all different angles of the club. It's gonna be a great night.
We have my buddy sitting in on 2nd guitar, and everyone is getting along and gelling nicely. We have at least two more practices until the show. It's gonna be great!
Agitator November 8th, 2011, 07:08 PM Congratulations. You can't really see it, but my avatar is from a gig I played once at the Hatch Shell in Boston (where the Boston Pops play every 4th of July). That was a trip.
String Tree November 9th, 2011, 12:23 AM I brought Mr Burns along to express my feelings on this matter.

Justinvs November 9th, 2011, 10:41 AM Coolness! Give 'em hell at the show!
Tim Bowen November 9th, 2011, 11:41 AM Every time I've played Fat Matt's, I've wound up being placed on the side of the stage by the bathroom... meaning I had to lift the headstock of my guitar up whenever a patron visited the facilities! Also, that's the quintessential "small amp room"; I carried an AC15 there once and it felt like an AC30... I'm not really a small amp guy but I am at that room. Pro Jr. or Trace Elliot Vellocette is more than plenty.
Haven't been to Willie's in many years... last time I was there, the film Freejack was in production in town, and Mick Jagger was hanging out at the bar. No, I didn't bother him.
Anyway, have fun, and best of luck with the fund raising for your friend's mom.

dlb1001 November 9th, 2011, 03:48 PM Checked the Blind Willie's website...it is a cool looking place to play, with plenty of mojo! Looks like they book some really high end bands so congrats on getting to play there.
Knock 'em dead!
StarliteDeVille November 9th, 2011, 06:29 PM Congratulations! I may try to come up and catch you guys.
mistermullens November 9th, 2011, 10:01 PM Nice guitar.
I hope that my '72 Tele Custom RI is back in business by show time. Just got my 1meg pots in, and need to fix a ground issue.

Yeah, its a tight space at Fat Matts. I always thought that if I ever played there, my Vibro Champ loaded with 10" speaker would suffice.
It's been about six years I've been to Blind Willie's. I took this shot last time I was there.

Warm Gums November 9th, 2011, 10:12 PM It's allways nice to knock one off the bucket list.
I hae been fortunate to accomlish most of my goals, I find the important thing is to keep making new ones. A rolling stone gathers no moss.

This will only motivate me to do more. I thought if it ever happened, it might take quite a few years. Can't wait to see what's in store after this!

1955 November 10th, 2011, 07:25 AM Congrats! I know that's a killer feeling.
You know the cool thing about having a desire that will create happiness for yourself and others? It comes true. The entire universe will help you make it come true. Nothing like having a clear goal and lighting a fire underneath it to make it actually happen. The subconcious mind and the power of belief backed by action are so powerful.
Now you can shoot for another goal or two, make 'em even higher than your last one. Nothing's impossible!
mistermullens November 17th, 2011, 09:15 PM The gig was a huge success, and our best show ever! There were some good bands playing that day and the guys were a little nervous, but I guess that subsided once we got into the first song. There were seven bands on the bill, so we got to play for an hour each. After the last song, I just wanted to keep playing. It was such a great night, and the crowd was really digging us. Some real music lovers out there judging by their response to the songs, solos, dancing, and "hootin' & hollarin'!" Below is our setlist, and a couple of my favorite pics (w/Tele porn of course!) from the show. We also got HD video, but I won't get to see that until tomorrow. Songs were chosen based on who the benefit was for, her favorite songs/bands, and the venue.
Powderfinger
Susie Q
Mary Jane's Last Dance
Crazy Mama
Have You Ever Seen the Rain
Turn the Page
Tequila Sunrise
Dead Flowers
Further Up the Road
Straight to Hell

Big John Studd November 17th, 2011, 09:40 PM That's awesome! I lived in Atlanta 1989-2003. At one point I lived in an apartment on Briarcliff under Luther the Houserocker's sax player. I used to go to Blind Willies a lot. My first gig was just south of there at the Star Bar. I look forward to seeing the video!
Agitator November 18th, 2011, 09:02 AM Great pix... congrats on the gig.
Also... "Crazy Mama"? One of my faves. Played that in the first band I ever played guitar in. "Straight to Hell"? Is that the Clash song? Love it.
Also... nice guitar.
mistermullens November 18th, 2011, 11:06 PM Straight to Hell is by Drivin' N' Cryin'. They are from Athens, GA, and had some success in the 90s. Very popular song around here.
As for the guitar, it was great to have it up and running again. I put in some 1meg pots for the humbucker, and it's close to being good, but I still need some time with it to know if I'm satisfied with the change. Great guitar.
Agitator November 19th, 2011, 02:25 AM I remember that band (are they still together?). Don't know that tune though.
garytelecastor November 19th, 2011, 02:49 AM Congrats MM.
KCKC November 19th, 2011, 07:11 AM Way to lend a hand and have a ball doing so!
Good on you and all those who pulled it together..

Big John Studd November 20th, 2011, 01:50 AM I remember that band (are they still together?). Don't know that tune though.
Still together. They recently had a whole entire trailer full of gear stolen while spending the night at a hotel after a gig in Macon :(
mistermullens November 26th, 2011, 10:55 AM I was lucky enough to accomplish my other top musical goal this weekend. I got to sit in with some guys I know for almost a full set. It was great. Got to play mostly blues, which is something I don't normally get to do. Sang some tunes too. Here are some photos.
