Played The New Les Paul Juniors Today!

Alto Music in Middletown, NY got the first shipment of those new Les Paul Juniors in today, and I played the TV Yellow and Pelham Blue ones. Wow! They both have glossy finishes, dark obeche fretboards (which looked more like ebony), the workmanship was very nice, they played great, looked great, and sounded amazing. The Pelham Blue one was a little more lively and it looked incredible. I've never seen a Junior in that finish before. Totally cool.

The best part: Only $649!

The new SG Juniors come in soon, finished in glossy Heritage Cherry. I can see one of these and a Pelham Blue Junior in my future. I got lots of drum stuff I can sell. Gotta start this weekend.

Are they P-90 guitars? The only find on a quick google search looks more like a stripped down LP studio with humbuckers than a true LP jr.

The new lp jr's look great, but I'm holding out for the SG Juniors. I wish they would post some information and or pics.

They are P-90 equipped, and I would like to see a double cut Junior also so I can get my Johnny Thunders jones happening. I plan to call Gibson CS and request it.

These Juniors look amazing in Pelham Blue!

You'll see the SG Juniors online very soon.

I've always wanted a TV Yellow Jr. But when I saw the pics of the Pelham Blue, my resolve began to waver. It doesn't help to hear it looks good in person as well as in pics.

I love Juniors, these look a step closer to the mark then the previous satin models. It's interesting that they choose a species of wood for the neck to give it that old-school dark color. Some of the recent Juniors looked to have very dusty looking, light boards to me. The TV Yellow could be a bit more limed, but that is nit picking. I'm guessing that if they went with a really authentic color they worried they'll muscle in on the historic reissue market.

I'd rather has a new USA Gibson TV Junior than a Chinese Gretsch any day.

I know JakeDogma is crazy for his Junior. Hopefully he'll check in on this thread.
Me? I holding out for an Alpine White with an Ebony fretboard.
It is about time the price is in a zone of reality again.
$1000+ for a Geetar originally marketed to middle schoolers was nuts.

Did anyone get to play the now discontinued Lawsuit Austin Juniors and Specials?
The last ones before they shut 'em down?

DrumBob did the fretboard FEEL like Ebony as well? that would be the clincher
,I played the satin alpine white one that Stan mentioned above the other day at a chain store and I liked it a lot , I am very fond of ebony boards so it felt like something I would have custom ordered but the two above are soo beautiful , Always wanted a T.V. Yellow one but dang...that Blue is stunning ,I have yet to play one of the above pictured , curious to find out how that fretboard wood feels and sounds ...looks like ebony but I am unfamiliar with that wood(obeche?)

I love the sound of P-90s. I would like to see a two pick up model as well but as of right now, I think I'll buy 2 of 'em and let one sit in a case and remain pretty while I play the other.

Anything looks good in Pelham blue, it's a real mystical magical mojo colour for Gibsons. Sounds like good value for money.

I tried to search Alto Music's website, what a clunker. 637 guitars, tiny thumbnails, not searchable by key words. I could not wade through 37 pages of haphazardly arranged inventory trying to find these new gloss finish Juniors.

Apparently Music Zoo hasn't got any yet. Anybody else to try?

I believe it felt more like rosewood, but I'm not the best judge of this, as I have never really noted that much difference between the two. I have always been told that ebony is a little more "oily" than rosewood, so if that's true, I'd say the 'board was more like rosewood. Best thing to do is try it for yourself, obviously.

I'm destined for one of each color, I think, and the new SG Junior.

Now, what can I sell to finance the purchases? I have a ton of percussion equipment I can put up on Flea-bay.

If GC carries it then it stands to reason that Musicians Friend does too and their sales and return policy is mucho better than GC's.

Thanks for the heads-up on the GC models. I've played a couple and they were decent, but they just weren't doing it for me. Could have been the thin neck profile (I've gotten really comfortable with the chunkier neck of my SG Standard). MF is selling the single cut Specials for a great price...$750.00; maybe they are blowing them out in anticipation of a new Special in the pipeline. I'm gonna be patient and hang onto my $$$ until just the right guitar comes along (which has not been easy with the 15% off coupon from GC...almost pulled the trigger on an American Special Tele). Would love to find something used at the Philly Guitar show in November.

That Phelam blue junior is stunning, I've just bought an epiphone korina Junior, but that is seriously tempting if it makes it's way over to the UK.

I do indeed love my Jr. A singlecut TV Jr. was a "life list" guitar for me. I've wanted one almost since I started playing. Never stumbled onto one I could afford. I saw a custom shop version some time ago, but no way in hell was I spending $3K for a Jr. It's a one pickup plank designed for students for cryin' out loud. The ultimate budget Gibson.

Early this year, I stumbled into GC to buy strings on one of their big sale weekends. As I walked by the guitar desk, there were a bunch of guys standing around waiting for stuff to come out of Gibson boxes, new exclusives. As I walked by, an employee (whom I have a bought a crapload of stuff from) pulls a gig bag, and proceeds to extract from it a TV yellow single cut Jr. A small crowd of guys all begin to oooh and ahhh, I just walked behind the counter and took it. Folks were not happy, but whatever. I waited for more than twenty years for that moment. Sale weekend price- $599, and I had a 15% off coupon.

Since then, it has been my main gigger. I use it several nights a week. Mine is a GC exclusive, with a satin finish, and no P-90, it sports a humbucker, and the tone pot pulls up to tap. Tapped, it sounds VERY much like a P-90. In humbucker mode, it positively screams.

It is an absolutely amazing playing and sounding guitar, and if you read my posts about guitars, I am as picky as it gets. I got a screaming deal on mine, but if I had known ahead of time what it would play and sound like, I would have paid double without blinking. It's an amazing instrument.

The satin finish is VERY thin, and wears like crazy. The top is now polished to a high gloss wherever it gets a lot of contact, and I think it will start to wear through soon. The back of the guitar is worn completely through to wood where my buckle and the clip form my pocket knife contact it. The edges of the headstock are nice and worn where I lean it on walls and such ( I do not own or believe in guitar stands). I have no idea what pickup is in it. I emailed Gibson several times and they have never answered. Truthfully, I don't even care anymore. It sounds great, so why does it matter?

I will die with this guitar. Never thought I'd say that.

The point here, is that if these new ones are anything close to the one I got, GO BUY ONE. I want a blue one now to go with my TV. Or I may just want another TV with a gloss finish and a P-90... Mine is a beast. I've used it for rock gigs, country gigs, blues gigs, backing up a singer songwriter, I can't imagine a gig I would NOT use it on. It's totally amazing.

When I initially picked it up, I didn't even care if I ever played it. It was just something I had always wanted, and I finally found one for the right price, so I grabbed it. If it had just sat around the house I'd have been happy. But bonus, I got a favorite axe. Gotta go play it now.

Jake...I have played a few of these exclusive GC Juniors and tried to get a better deal on Labor Day Weekend, but they wouldn't go below $599. so I passed. I agree, they're cool guitars, but I'm glad I waited now with the new Juniors available. Can't wait for the SG Juniors.

Can you post a pic of yours?

I was wondering how those sounded w/ the HB rather than the P90. It didn't jazz me much as it reminded me of the Epi Jr which I already own. Fun guitar for cheap BTW. Enjoy!

I find it curious that they'd use obeche for a fingerboard. I have a very light one-piece Tele body made from this. The obeche I have is very porous and light, far away from being like rosewood. It's also pretty light colored.

http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/obeche.htm

I wonder if there are different qualities from different parts of the tree or if they're going back to the cheaper lumber days. Remember those dyed or painted fingerboards on older, inexpensive guitars? If Gibson is making this work and the quality is there, more power to them. Wood is becoming a scarce resource and good substitutes are welcome. I'll have to go see for myself.

My Jr. is from last year, and has a rosewood board. My Melody Maker is from this year, and has one of those new "Torrefied Maple" fingerboards. It's so much like rosewood, that it doesn't bother me at all.
