The other day I posted a thread titled, "Incoming", in which I described what I would call a bomb of a show because of venue misunderstandings and poor sound quality. Well, Thursday night the band had our first show since that one and we definitely redeemed ourselves.... to ourselves. It helped that the venue expected original music and the crowd was ready for rowdy rock n roll.
I'm posting this for the other band folks because it reminded me WHY I love playing live music. Without that drive to be on stage and love of putting on a good show, I wouldn't be a musician. I'd be playing golf or watching Jersey Shore instead of writing lyrics, tweaking amp knobs, comparing pick-ups, and going blind reading TDPRI. OK, maybe not Jersey Shore, but you get my point. Sometimes you just gotta get back to the basics of WHY you're doing it in the first place.
A cool side note... I was playing my Mellecaster Tele into my newly modded '59 Bassman LTD. After the show, my brother (who is also a tonehound) walked up to me and said, "Man, your tone was on! That's a mean set-up!". That was pretty awesome. But even cooler was when the guitarist for the next band (we've done shows together before) walked up as I was putting up my gear and says, "hey man, your tone was killer! Before you put that Bassman up, do you mind if I borrow it for our set?" Coming from a professional musician who is pretty accomplished, this was a HUGE compliment. I let him use it and he sounded awesome.
Just goes to show ya, it's all about matching your style with the venue and that "any gig" isn't always a "good gig", but you can never let 'em take away your passion.
