SamClemons September 26th, 2011, 04:59 PM Guy is wanting to trade me a 2010 Les Paul in like new condition SG Standard with Factory Hardshell case, but he has changed out the tuners with nice Grovers, the bridge and tailpiece with tonepros, and the pickups with Duncans. Do you think this would hurt, help, or leave the current value as is. He sees them all as upgrades, I would rather have it as was.
lckyjcky September 26th, 2011, 05:08 PM In almost all cases, original/factory equipped guitars trump modded guitars of the same model. If I were in your shoes, and I'm not, I'd insist on getting the originals back on his SG, or else I'd value it less, it don't matter that upgrades are higher-quality components, they're still non-Gibson and their presence on your guitar LESSENS the value of the guitar. This is all just My Humble Opinion.
paratus September 26th, 2011, 05:59 PM If it was me, I would devalue the guitar based on the mods. Not that they aren't good pieces, but the guitar would be worth more if it was stock.
stringslinger01 September 26th, 2011, 06:28 PM I would rather have an all original guitar. Since it's not very old, the value will not go down as much as if it were an older guitar; but it will still go down. At least to me...
Alexandre September 27th, 2011, 07:17 AM unmoded SG's retain their value quite well. I'm ok with upgraded tunners, but stock bridge and pickup are fine and make an SG... an SG! Unless he included the original parts, price will be lower for sure.
purpletele September 27th, 2011, 11:13 AM I agree with the above. Those are great mods, but they are his mods, not yours. Sure it cost him money to do the mods, but that's something you need to consider when modding a guitar. Will you ever sell it? If so, then make sure you can get your money back somehow by either reclaiming the parts or not having too much cash sunk into it.

If he is making it sound like he is throwing the case in as a bonus do not fall for it as they all come with cases.
As for the upgrades - they are only worth something if a buyer thinks they are so, if you do not, make him aware of that.
