Just this week I managed to buy back off one of my friends the first ever tele (and guitar) I bought brand new back in about 2000. It had gone through three owners and after about 10 years I have it back...I'm so happy..I will never sell it away again...

Here's my humble Teles...

A 1998 Affinity, modified a little.

And a Squier Telecaster Custom. Refinished. I was planning to changing the bridge to a standard Tele bridge with single coil, but I don't trust myself drilling holes, so I'm going to pass it on to someone else before I ruin it!

This is my favorite Tele build so far. Mahogany body and neck w/ebony fret board and black headstock. Clear crimson finish and Gibson speed knobs. Harmonic Designs S90 in bridge and Z90 in neck. Very much a Tele in Gibson clothes, it sounds alot like a Les Paul Jr with a little more bite.

Here's my heavy relic partscaster. It's a home-relic'd HWY 1 body with a vintage AVRI 52 neck with real wear. Tonerider Hot Classic pups. She's a complete mongrel but I designed her that way. At first the wear on the back wasn't enough, but then I overdid it. I don't care, no one sees the back but me.

This started life as a DIY project but I quickly realised that my ideas were beyond the means of my hand tools so I took the bits and pieces to Steve Salvi, a luthier here in Adelaide. The end result is a custom job that took 5 months to complete [much discussion on the DIY thread here about this one].
It includes:
Baritone Special neck [Sold by Fender with a Jag HH Body] & Alder body. The 27" scale neck was shortened by 1/2" under the fretboard at the point where the neck fits into the pocket, thus the Tele's total length is just 1" longer than stock. Shown are my G&L ASAT Semihollow Special and a custom PJ Bass for comparison.
Hardware:
Robert Cray Strat tuners [these needed no mods to accommodate D'Addario Light Baritone strings - .062]
Bill and Beck Keystone Pickups
Mustang Bridge
Jaguar Tremolo Unit
Custom Pickguard - my design - this process was by far the most time consuming of the whole project. Steve Salvi has the template for this.
'Texas' brand Volume and Tone pots [the Texas tone pot is very erratic and noisey and it cost like 4 times a normal tele set - I will be swapping this out as soon as I have the time]
A Gibson three-way switch on the Pickguard
Fender Neck Mounting Plate & Strap Pins

The cost of the project should have been much higher than I actually paid but Steve gets to keep the template so on balance it was fair. Parts and labour cost me around $A 1700.00 but I doubt if I would get change out of $3000.00 retail if another one existed.

Its unique and it sounds great, even with the dodgy tone-pot. Played through my Ashdown [Bass] mag 200 UK model with the sub-harmonics engaged it works as an 'exotic' bass, then through my Fender Super Twin it sounds like a really deep telecaster on steroids - this is where it really shines and I am making new music with it already - yee haa!

My La Cabronita tribute. It's a really cheap assembly ($235) so I wouldn't call it a clone exactly, but it sounds great. Rutters 1-piece sugar pine body, Rutters pickguard, Affinity neck (no problem with width for me), GFS Retrotron bridge pup, most stuff right out of TDPRI classifieds.

Build quality and feel is superb. Originally had a HB at the neck and a modern style 6 saddle bridge, but I decided to mod it slightly for the classic tele look and sound - have also replaced all pots caps and switches with USA quality ones. I really really like it now.

here's mine....with my patented (not yet) hipshot modification....
...well, it works for me !!!

it never gets out of tune...for a B-bender it's a big plus.

the voodoo TE-60 are fantastic on my vox ac30 (I like them less, on the blues junior, but maybe it's just the amp).

and it's perfectly intonated.

what could you ask for more ?

Of course, I was only kidding:wink:....I know that the principle is adopted in Palm Benders...BUT : if you try to put a strat tremolo arm in the hole of the Hipshot, you'll see that it is stopped in its run by the bridgeplate border, before the string bends one whole tone.
so I put two rubber wires, sliced on one side, of two different sizes.
I wrapped them, one above the other, around the metal bar that is the fulcrum , and locked with 2 of those locks, that you tight with a screwdriver (wish I knew the name), so the fulcrum point is higher, the throw sligtly longer, the action easier and free to reach the end of its run.

http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq334/marcuccero/hipshot.jpg

but...I don't want any patent for my fantastic, unreachable, unbeatable, gorgeous creation !:cool::cool:
just give my name to an important street of tupelo, mississipi...and I will be happy.

I find it a very easy, intuitive, confortable way to use it, way better than using the hip...and if you don't want to use it...zac ! it's not a five seconds matter, it's an one second matter.
and you can do palm muting, if you take away the bar, that you cannot do with a bigsby palm bender.

Fender MIM.....I did some upgrades. Changed the bridge plate and saddles. The bridge pup is one from a 52 RI that a friend sold me for 20 bucks. I replaced the tunners with Grover locking rotomatics. I hate the stock neck pup and I will either get an esquire pickgaurd or get a seymour duncan neck pup for her. I love this guitar. Nothing fancy or rare but it plays and sounds incredible.

Again lots of nice stuff here...Love that BMW color Falconer.

My CV 50 already had some serieus dangs when I bought it so I had to go direction a little worn/relic look.
Already de-chromed the hardware a bit, some vintage dome knobs and a SD Hotrails in the bridge. Also gonna put a old DeArmond from my Kay in the neck position.
Here the org. blackguard was still on and a tape stripe just to get an idea how some black competition stripes will look on it...

My latest acquisition. Van de Haar Telecaster style guitar. Slightly reliced. Lollar 52 PUs. Unplugged:
Extremely resonant yet feather light 6,6 pound Tele w. highly stripe figured bird's eye maple neck, 52 profile.
Clean separation and accurate definition of the wound strings. Plain strings on the mellow side. All in all strat like mid rangy sound.

Plugged:
Very twangy, dynamic and modulation friendly sounding guitar. Fun to play. The bright spots on the guitar's surface a re reflections of the sky through the tree leaves.

Those are my effects in back that I use mainly for bass but fits in well with a guitar. I'm only as far as my living room as a guitarist but have been gigging in local bands on bass for about 10 years.

I bought her yesterday of a kid on craigslist. I took the old strings off, oiled the fingerboard and neck, cleaned all the dust and schmaltz off of the PG, slapped a new set of strings on and now it's a blast to play.

I definitely have some upgrades in mind. She has a lot of potential.

Hallo to everybody, I'm a newbie here (just introduced myself in the Welcome Wagon section the other day). Got a lot of inspiration from this great forum, so I wanted to show my 2008 Highway Tele, on which I did a few mods. The most evident thing is the "dulling job" on the chrome parts and the pickguard.
Changed the stock pups with Toneriders (Vintage Plus set), quite satisfied of the tone... Planning to upgrade the tuners in the near future.

I've been playing this one lately at my guitar classes (I'm teaching guitar immersion to 8-14 year olds at a local college). Goes over great with the kids, sounds wonderful through my Princetons. My arm is numb from carrying it across campus (12 lbs. plus the hardcase and amp in my other hand).

Very well thus far. It can tap to go single coil too. But really, I'll have to spend a lot of time on a traditional Tele to make up my mind 100%. I'm just comparing to my 2 Strats now.

I was excited to pick it up from the shop after being set up. But they need to fix their set up. I'm getting buzz on the 1st fret on the A,D and the 13th fret on G,B,E. So bummed. They had it for 5 days!

Very interesting hybrid! The pickguard shape is quite unique, it seems to my eyes that you got inspiration also from a Music Man bass, maybe? Anyhow, I like your guitar a lot.

Since this Sticky is still getting attention, I thought I'd get in on it. All of the Teles below were made in my shop from scatch. The Texas Tele was the first build I started but I finished the Maple Thinline before it.

Texas Tele: Alder and quilted maple.
Maple Thinline: Flame maple top and back, hand bent maple sides. Chambered maple core.
Ash Thinline: Quarter sawn ash,
Walnut Tele: Solid walnut.
Fiesta Red Tele: Alder.
Strat-Tele: Alder and flame maple.

I heard those paulownia body Teles are great on tone and very light. I wish I remembered the name of these guys in Nashville making some. I saw a video of them talking at NAMM & didn't write it down because I thought I'd remember their name so I could Google them later. Nope. They raved about their new paulownia T-style. Yours looks cool.

July 19th, 2010, 12:28 PM
Thanks man. The thing is freakishly light. So light that to compensate for the neck diving, I had to install a second strap button behind the neck heel and all a little weight to the bottom of my guitar strap. The sound is terrific, though. The only other thing to keep in mind is that this wood is so soft it will dent if you breath on it. I got an ugly chip in the front from a plastic spring loaded clap with a foam buffer. Just the pressure of the clip bit into the wood and caused the paint to chip. Bottom line: I don't expect it to stay pretty very long. A year of actual use will likely "relic" it to the point that it will look like it did 25 years of service on the chitlin circuit. Since the body was only $49 I don't mind as long as it sounds and plays well and the screws (especially strap button and Bigsby mounting screws) stay put.

If you want one of these things built right, look for Rob Distefano on this board. He just sold a paulownia tele he built himself for something like $400.

I just got done refinishing my '73 Tele myself. The tint came out a bit dark, but I cannot complain as it came out to a nice mirror like finish. I didn't use any grain filler, but quite a few layers of nitro that I sanded in between coats. It's lightweight and plays superbly well. A few trivial parts have been swapped out, but overall it's mostly original. Here is a pic of my Tele with my LP and 335.

Here's my first attempt at guitar building...now if I only knew how to play. The body was scratch built from 3 pieces of ash. Terry Downs' Telecaster PDF drawing was used to make the body. I cheated on the neck; it was purchased. The pickups are noiseless Fender units. It still isn't dialed in, but it sounds pretty good for where it is in the construction cycle.

Hello all telecaster afficionados,

just finished building my second 'Alleycat Relics' '52.
And I sold it yesterday. I found it a bit hard to part...

Alder body, vintage 52 neck
Fender Noiseless pickups, vintage F bridge etc etc.
And luckily my local hardware store had all needed slot screws in the back :-)

Luckily I am building another one almost exactly the same.

Chrs,

Krijn 'Alleycat Relics' from Amsterdam.

"THIS JUST IN...Nocaster!!!"

It arrived late Friday with just enough time to slap a set of strings on it and head for the gig. Never touched the other guitars I'd brought as backups. I'm hooked <again>

I had to get another one. I posted here earlier my stock 78 but the downside of the 78 is I feel really bad about modifying it in any way. I wanted something that I could experiment with and build they way I want. So here it is, the consummate modified tele, the Jerry Donahue. Jerry did all that he wanted to make this tele his own and now I have modified it yet again to be all that I want. Here it is to date:

To remain the same:
Bound sunburst body......stock
Soft V neck......stock

Modified already:
CTS Pots..........mod
Switchcraft 3way....mod
Switchcraft jack.....mod
Vitamin Q "paper in oil" cap....mod
Electrosocket cup.....mod
custom shop strat neck pup.....mod
custom shop bridge pup.....mod
cloth covered wiring.....mod
new jack plate and knobs.....mod (only so I could keep the original electronics in one assembly)

yet to be done:
brass compensated saddles
bone nut
18:1 tuners

The bottom line..........my favorite guitar

I honestly do not know what the exact model name is. If you know what it is, I would love to know!.
It has the body of a '72 tele deluxe, in white, and a regular tele neck.

Here's a few Teles..to add.. a few Squires that gather dust, I loaned the mahogany set neck one to a mate.. the house rig with a choice '83 US one and the V33 ..I have two other '83 Teles kicking around, but they all look the same, basic black/white.....
the tobacco burst one went through the belt sander to be the one in the middle shot.. all woody like.. I'm going to hog that one out and put a nice top on it one day for a thinline attempt....
