Mr Zadizaza May 26th, 2009, 12:48 PM A recent eBay acquisition... a reasonably rare Tele Plus DELUXE
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-7/1052255/FenderUSATelePlusTremBodyBack_2.jpg
Yes, it has lace sensor pickups a roller nut and a Strat style Tremelo bridge...

hello. for ages i'm dreaming to have strat tremolo on my tele,
and your combo is the best i've seen!!! can you please tell me
how did you do it? was it difficult? got pictures, diagrams, whatever?
please...
boris bubbanov May 26th, 2009, 02:03 PM Wow, boris bubbanov, thats one fine lookin babe you got there. I love blondes.
Thanks. Yes, blondes are great, and around here there always tension over which ash bodies should stay clear and which ones should go semi-trans. Here's a couple much glossier ones still in the finishing chain:

Where did the cool pickguard come from?

The Strat. (Number two, and my trusted workhorse. Never let me down thus far.)
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/4971/05272009298.jpg
And my half-scale-ish Harmony acoustic I got for $50 in Nashville. Sat on a street corner with it for a half hour and just played some blues on that cruddy little thing. The paint and stickers came later.
I've got a P-Bass too, but it's in pieces at the moment. Getting a refinish.
johnner72 May 29th, 2009, 04:31 PM Got my '98 Coppercaster today. Here she is with her new sisters
KenManiac May 29th, 2009, 07:03 PM This is an old Frankenrelic, it's a '58 neck, near as I can figure, and a 5-something body, no way to tell. Unfortunately before I got it someone took a belt sander to it, trying to Stratify it.
I got it as a bag of parts, all are mismatched and not the right era. No dates on the body or neck, (didn't try forensic stuff like blacklights) but it has the nail holes and router pin holes and the extra diagonal body rout. I KNOW it's not a recent reissue because I've had it for over 20 years (many of those spent in that same paper grocery bag I got it in)
It does have nice old tuners, perhaps the original frets, and some mojo. I have somewhere some old pickups, both failed open, but probably worth fixing/rewinding.

All my guitars. Maybe a sad collection, but it's alright. The acoustic is a Fender Cameron and the Strat is a CP60 with a Dimarzio Super Distortion S humbucker and CS69's.

My MIM Standard Tele. I changed the pickguard and the neck pickup, it's a CS69 Strat-pickup. I'll soon change the bridge to a 3-saddle vintage style.

Prairie Belt June 11th, 2009, 10:21 AM There are some sweet guitars on this thread! Just got this early 52 RI Thin Skin. It has the larger frets, but the vintage radius. The bridge plate, saddles and controls are Callaham, & the bridge pu is a Don Mare lap steel. While the photo doesn't show it, that finish really is pretty delicate. It already has a good amount of wear on it. Here it is nestled among the clover:

Teleblooz June 19th, 2009, 07:58 PM Not really a new Tele, rather a reconfiguring of one that was always "almost there".
A little over a year ago, I decided to try my hand at my first partscaster.
I scored a Standard body and a Fender neck on eBay. Being a long-time Keef fan, I decided to go with a humbucker in the neck. Found one from Rockfield that seemed to fill the bill. Got an American standard bridge pup, dropped in a Wilkinson 3-saddle bridge and was good to go.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa316/teleblooz_photos/HPIM0284.jpg
When I got the neck it had a black Fender logo decal on it. Having never seen one in black, I sorta figured maybe the previous owner whipped it up on his own, which I'm not particularly keen on, so I sanded it off. I checked the neck out for playability and it acquitted itself nicely (in fact it plays better than the one on my #1). And having gotten a good deal on it, I wasn't going to make much of a fuss. As it happens, shortly thereafter I discovered that it was indeed the real thing, part of the "Squier Series". Oh well. Plug and play.
Having become accustomed to the treble response of single-coils, I did what I could to brighten the 'bucker up. Wired in a coil-splitter switch, replaced the volume pot with a 500k, and swapped out the Wilky bridge for the modern-style 6-saddle I'd pulled out of my MIM Standard.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa316/teleblooz_photos/hpim0444web.jpg
I started using "Miss Lucy" as my backup at gigs, giving her a couple of feature spots where the crunch of the 'bucker could be used to best advantage. But mostly she stayed in her stand, waiting forlornly for a string break on my #1 Baby Blue.
Eventually I started feeling like the bridge pickup was overbalanced by the big Rockfield, so I dropped in a SD Lil '59 I had hanging around in my parts box. It worked, and between the two HBs they made a joyful noise when sweetened with a judicious bit of overdrive.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa316/teleblooz_photos/hpim0481.jpg
I love the sound of a Tele neck pup through a good clean(ish) tube amp though, and that's where this combination fell short. A clean humbucker just doesn't do it for me, and splitting the coils just ain't the same thing.
Finally, last month I had some time on my hands, recuperating from surgery. I just couldn't stand the thought of Lucy spending the rest of her days as a wall decoration. I scored a standard Tele neck pup for a whopping $18 including shipping. I dropped it in and it was night and day. Of course the treble could now clean your teeth at 20 yards, so I changed the volume pot to a 250k, pulled out the steel-saddle bridge and returned the Wilky with its 3 brass saddles to its rightful spot, and everything sweetened up nicely. Now this guitar is magic! I kept the Lil 59 in the bridge and the 500k tone pot, and now I can't stop playing it.

This may be a stupid question, but how did they make that pickguard? Seems to me that if it was painted on the top it'd be all scratched up by now... Beautiful guitar, btw, I keep looking at Warmoth's antigua finish for a future (fantasy?) project.
AjayTele June 21st, 2009, 05:31 PM These pickguard are painted...I don't know how it's not been scratched.
I guess it's possible that it's a repro, but the guitar as a whole doesn't have a lot of wear, so maybe it's original.

pcypert June 22nd, 2009, 10:46 PM That settles it...I'm looking at Teles on my Japan trip next week :)
pullchord June 23rd, 2009, 12:11 AM Ed, she looks great, but....wish I'd left her alone. In her unaltered state, she was a 60th birthday gift from Bobby Richardson (Dion's new LP) made from some after-market parts. I put a set of Fender Noiseless Tele PUPS in her...hated 'em. Then I put a P-94 in the neck. Looked great but didn't sound all that great. Then I put a Rio grande in the bridge...a little better but back to the buzz which I hate. Then I just HAD to have a center PUP. Put in a Bill Lawrence Strat 280. Then out goes the P-94 and in goes the TV Jones Filtertron. Out goes the Rio Grande and in goes a DiMarzio Chopper, wired to a 3-way mini toggle for series/'bucker, parallel, and true single. I'm a little happier now. Even in full 'bucker, the Chopper maintains some Tele character. I only use the center 280 by itself. Mixing it with the Chopper or the 'Tron does NOT give me StratQuack, and I'm thinking of ripping it out altogether. The 'Tron + the Chopper is so-so (pull up on the volume knob and that switches in the 'Tron regardless of PUP switch position). 90% of the time when I play, it's just the Chopper. Lately I've been cheating on her, looking at other Tele's...

Is someone a Jeff Buckley fan?
I had one of those chrome pickguards on one of my Teles, it was only when I got bored and swapped it that I noticed how much brighter the neck pickup became. Don't know how much of that was attributable to the chrome pickguard but it was a heck of a difference.

Can you tell us what are the specs of the humbucker-sized P90, bridge pickup, pots, wiring? And how is the balance between the pickups? Cheers!
95strat June 26th, 2009, 11:53 PM In that image it's a GFS Dream 90 in the neck with a GFS 1960's HOT Alnico Tele Bridge Pickup. The two balanced very well. Both were wired to 250k pots using a 4-way switch. I'm not a big twang guy so I pretty much used the configuration with the neck in parallel and series predominately.
Recently I swapped those pups out for a Duncan Phat Cat in the neck and a Duncan Quarter Pound in the bridge wired with a 500k pot. Wow, what a difference. The GFS pups were actually very good, but the Duncans are a completely different sound. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I did a magnet swap in the Phat cat. Switched them from A5/A5 to an A4/2 combination for more chime.
And the quarter pound I get a really nice hot cutting bridge tone, but not as crunchy as a humbucker. I can actually play that pickup on its own and avoid massive amounts of twang. It's almost like having a p90 in the bridge. I'm still working on the balance. The QP is very hot so I'm still playing around with the pickup to string distance.
I get more chime from this combo as well, which is what I was looking for. The GFS's were more mellow. Great for clean tones. The Duncans can do both.
Hope that helps.

yep, you spotted it, I'm a BIG Buckley fan, and so far, I still like the look of the chrome guard. Interesting point you make about the possible tone difference, I should investigate that further. Cool, thanks for the tip.

I'm a fan too. The pickguard certainly took away some of the "top" from the neck pickup, there's no doubt. I noticed it immediately I fired up after changing it for a traditional plastic one.
However, it may not be the same for you. I was using a "twisted Tele" neck pickup with 4-way switch and hence a seperate ground for the cover. Whether any of these factors made a difference, I don't know. Give it a try with the pickguard off and I'd be interested in your findings.

Yes, original pickup - I like it.
It's wired: no-tone / tone / "cocked wah", as many in this forum do.

hannigan July 30th, 2009, 08:08 PM I am no expert but doesnt the N4 in the serial number mean 1994 ?
flipside July 30th, 2009, 08:22 PM I'm no expert either, but I looked up the SN on a website, and it said that it could be 94 or 95. But on the body/heel it says 95, so I guess that's what it is. My question is whether or not it's a true relic. I read somewhere that Fender did make some relics in Mexico in the early 90s. I also found a guy on Craigslist selling a MIM 1995 strat that had been relic'ed. I would find it odd that anyone would bootleg a relic MIM Fender to begin with, and the fact that we both have one from 1995 makes me think maybe there really is something to there having been some relics made in Mexico during th early 90s. So maybe I have kind of a rare guitar here...who knows. I bought it because I liked it though--not because I thought it was rare or anything.

where'd you get that leather guard, and how'd you do the patterns on the body finish?
The leather pickguard and engraved hardware you can get from the boys at Eldorado Guitar Straps (http://www.eldoradostraps.com/)
The engraving is actually pyrography... find and buy a pyrography pen from ebay or online... make the designs, transfer them to the body with carbon paper and then burn it into the wood (be sure to teach yourself on some scrap wood). The body was then dyed, and then finished with smokey nitro (clear but with very light trans grey/blonde/tint added) then it was buffed to a shine with rubbing compound and aged.

Don't usually go for gold hardware, but this combining of the matte finish sunburst Highway One body with a Classic 60's type neck and with the glossy 3 ply BWB pickguard is sooooo elegant.

Thanks. It is my '66 Custom Telecaster partscaster tribute. There is a Fender Custom Shop model at Dave's, which sells for over $2500.00 Thought I could do one for a bit cheaper.
Plays great and sounds wonderful. It is loaded with Duncan Antiquity II's, which really compliment the maple neck.

It's beautiful. I'm wondering what it would look like with a rosewood fingerboard too....
The more I see other people's Teles on here, the more I'm beginning to think that my ideal Tele (for looks!) would be a double-bound lake placid blue Esquire with a slightly aged parchment pickguard and a rosewood f/board. Sounds like a project coming on...

You really did an amazing job on that Tele! I can't stop staring at those pics. It's both original and gorgeous at the same time. Outstanding! I'm almost tempted to go out and buy a wood-burning pen and have a go at one of my guitars. But with my total lack of graphics talent, I might as well toss some lighter fluid on it and set it on fire.
Anyway, thanks again for posting those pics.

Nice one man! Are you playing out of a Hot Rod Deluxe?
BuddyLee September 29th, 2009, 10:39 PM I just picked up this Vintage Hot Rod '52 Telecaster today. I had to drive about 3 hours each way to pick it up, but it was worth it for half retail price. I may have to replace the switch because I cannot hear a difference between the center position and the neck position. The guy I bought it from said he had not changed anything, that it was in original condition. I pulled the control plate and the pick guard and everything seems legit.
A couple minor scratches in the usual spots on the back from buttons and such, but none of them are through the finish. And the top is flawless. This one is a two piece body. It looks like it has barely been played, the neck is still sticky.
Does anyone know a awesome tech in the South Bay or Peninsula? Or should I just take it to Guitar Showcase or Griffin?

Yeah, I fell in love with the model the first time I plugged one in. There is something special about that humbucker in the neck position. I played the regular '52 RI and it was just not the same. This is the first Tele that I played where I actually want to use the neck position.
I was just playing Rabble Rouser through my headphones and it was good.
I really like how the brass saddles sound in comparison to my '92 AmSt. It gives a really cool sound when you scrape and pick block.
I am a happy camper.

This is a USACG one piece "bone" maple 9.5-12 compound radius 1 inch thick Super Soft Vee shaped neck. Heel truss rod adjust, walnut plug and skunk stripe.
6125 nickel silver frets, Tadeo neck section to headstock contour. Gotoh split shafts with ivory colored plastic buttons, proprietary Bubbanov finish. 1.72 width at the nut, stock heel dimensions. Callaham Premium string button (way the best).
The Tusq precut 1 + 11/16ths may be a "place holder". I'll get a batch of nice custom bone nuts to install in each of these, with a little wider string array, but these work very well for now.
Here's an image of another neck from the same specs:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t25/Bubbanov/20MAY052009001.jpg
You may see that the precut nut isn't even quite long enough - not flush on the end. I could've shaved off the wood but I am trying to force myself to go with the wider nut.

I need to take it back to where I bought it though. I got round to restringing the thing after I took this photo, and one of the tiny screws holding in one of the machine heads dropped out. I put it back in and finished restringing, but I can't be doing with that happening every time I restring, so I'm gonna get it dealt with. The place I got it from (Gamlin's Music Centre in Cardiff, UK) has been good to me over the years, so this shouldn't be an issue.
Apart from that, I love this guitar in a way I never quite did with my Mexican tele I had a couple of years ago.

Just changed the pickguard.
I'm going to put in some humbuckers, and down the road, maybe get a relic'd neck. A nice rosewood relic'd neck, 9.5 radius, with jumbo frets.

gtrplyr335 October 9th, 2009, 09:20 PM Well, many of you on this forum helped me when I had questions about swaping out the pickups on my new Tele to Dimarzios...Area Ts in both spots.
I now have them in....they sound great...and they are noiseless...
I thought the least I could do would be to share some pics of my new baby.
The photos don't do the color justice...Crimson Red..very cool in person.
Well...here goes....let me know what you think:

77 Tele All stock
Early 00's CIJ Paisley
Late 90's MIM Std. SD Hot Stacks New Bridge and Tuners
unbridled October 12th, 2009, 09:23 PM Here's the Tele I'll always keep. It's a mid 90s MIM Standard. Top-load only bridge. Modded with a 4-way switch (must-have) and a no-load tone control. I had Texas Specials in it but took them back out in favor of the stock pickups. It's got Tusq saddles on it right now, which are just so-so.
It looks like Agave Blue to me, but, I guess that wasn't offered until '01 so, tell me what it is.

leylandbobby October 15th, 2009, 02:54 PM Hi all, I've been a spectator up until now, and may I say loving every minute of it. Engrossed doesn't come close.
I have to remember to bring a thermos and sandwiches when I come on site for a look around because the wife's sick of calling me for meals that I forget to eat......however I never could resist the chance to get 'em out. So I'm going to have to dip my toes in the water....
It's taken me 30 years to whittle it down to two non negotiable keepers.
Thanks for giving me the chance to get 'em out.
funff October 15th, 2009, 03:29 PM Welcome leylandbobby! Some nice figuring in both those necks! Glad you got round to posting, you'll enjoy it here
leylandbobby October 15th, 2009, 07:04 PM Thanks Funff, I was pleasantly suprised to see how many UK'ers are on here. I consider finding this place a real stroke of luck. Cheers.
