Actually, I never really understood Custom Shop guitars until a bought one (or three)...

The proof is in the PLAYING as far as I am concerned.

The answer is, yes, this guitar plays beautifully and sounds great!

A fairly fat neck, with a large radius fret board (don't know the specs, only what I feel), but you get used to that pretty quickly.

Intonation was perfect when I received it, making it a joy to play immediately.

This Esquire is a bit of a sleeper though - it does actually have a neck pickup, which is concealed, only the magnet poles protrude through the pickguard. It also has a 4 way switch, to give the full range of pickup options.

Overall, this is now one of my favourite guitars and I'm truly torn about keeping it unplayed as a collectable or just playing it as it sounds/plays so well.

Hi everyone. New here, thought this'd be a good place to start. I don't actually own a Fender Telecaster but I love the style and sound. Teles would have to be the most comfortable guitars I've ever played.

Here's my Cole Clark Culprit 3. It's a thinline tele style guitar made from primarily Aussie woods.

I've seen some amazing teles on these pages... gets the GAS going bad  I'm really wanting an esquire of some sort at the moment... not that I have the money

Cheers! Sounds good too

Ajaytele:

Whats the go with that neck pickup, did it come that way? Seems to defeat the idea behind the Esquire. Though I do like the idea of hiding it under the pickguard.

As far as playing it goes, I'm in the school of thought that instruments should be played not looked at. But that's just me.

Yeah, I suspect it's a sort of pseudo Esquire, not the "real thing", but nice nevertheless.

As far as the playing not looking thing is concerned: I still love playing some of the nicer lookers from time to time, but would never consider gigging them. but of course when you get to a certain number of guitars, it's physically impossible to play them all regularly, so you get used to the idea of having "display" guitars and playing guitars. Of course this is a way to enhance your GAS, as it alllow you to purchase two of each kind of guitar....

Used with a nice Jerry Donahue in the bridge for $ 320.
Lil diggin in the parts jar and you get this:

Don't let the "U" shape scare you, it is almost indistinguishable from the 50's Classic Tele or Esquire neck, at least this 1999 is. Previous owner went into a tailspin when the Allparts pickguard (for CIJ) wouldn't fit, then he lost the knobs, pretty soon he's just dumping it at GC.
Stew-Mac # 5167 saddles, D'addario 11-49 EXLs. Bridge position is nice.

Stew Mac brass saddles, 3-ply black pickguard, 4-way switch, Graphtech TUSQ nut, finish rubbed out with Meguiar's #2 cleaner followed by #7 glaze. And as of last night Fezz Parka wiring mod. One word: AWESOME!!!

Tried to get a decent shot of the wood grain/colour but couldn't really with my crappy camera. These will have to do. Much richer deep red colour in person.

Can't sleep tonight, so I thought I'd put up my first real post on the TDPRI. I've got an MIK Squier Double Fat Tele and a newly modded Squier 51. Here's the family enjoying a little rare WA sunshine this weekend:

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/olymark/SquierFamily_500X700.jpg

Little closer shot - that's an SD Pearly Gates in the bridge of the red tele and that rosewood neck is simply the best neck I've ever played:

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/olymark/SquierFamily_CloseUp_Small.jpg

I've been active on a Squier 51 forum for a few months (as an old IM handle, "Olymark"), and was referred over here when Boris Bubbanov mentioned the Buckocaster threads. Here's the decal work Buckocaster's threads inspired me to try - I got some big-time help from Mojocaster's images posted on the '51 forum:

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/olymark/51GT_Headstock_in_Sun.jpg

This is a fantastic forum and my Tele affliction will only continue to grow! I decided to update my handle for this forum - I'll buy a beer for the first one of you who guesses the significance of the numbers!

The neck/bridge/scratchplate and tuners are from my first good guitar...a MIJ '62 reissue from '92. The neck is absolutely fantastic. I gigged the guitar all around London. I refinished it crudely in light blue paint. A few years back I decided to try and do it properly and basically messed up by sanding too much around the neck pocket. As I was going to upgrade the pups, electrics and install a 4-way, I decided to just get another body for it in the colour I wanted. It just all fits together perfectly and I'm going to just leave it as it is. The pups are now Fender original '52s and sound great.

The one on the right, with the Keystones, is superb. Never had a jumbo fret guitar before I couldn't put down. I've been through both of them very carefully, and other than the Keystones and the Stew Mac #0099 bridge plate and a slight difference in color, they're the same. But they're not.
Honest, any genre, any style. With the Keystones the second, more indian red one out countrys, out high gains and out r & bs the first, better playability as a result of the far better sound if you know what I mean. Especially in positions one and three, and quiet.

Some guitars are better than others, and some pickups better as well.

Hello there, fellow twangers.
Very happy to have run into this forum. My good friend Daan Baars (Mr. Zigarillo) built me this golden thinline. It turned out very nice and has exactly the tonal range I was looking for.
The neck pickup is now a Tonefactory Pro-line humbucker-sized P90. The humbucker you see in the picture was way too muddy for my taste.
The bridge PU is some anonymous item (possibly from a *** squier tele). It sparkles without getting harsh. I run the thinline through a tubescreamer clone, an EHX Pulsar tremolo and a Digitech delay(soon to be replaced by an EHX Memoryman or a Copycat) into a late 80's Fender Super 60 tube amp.

I finally got to the sound that god intended for electric guitars. I am a very happy man.

Hope all is well with you ...

The Tele is a Musikraft body and a Warmoth neck -- see the build thread for the gory details.

http://www.masterthis.net/stuff/rathtele_body.jpg

Just swapped out the bridge today for a three-saddle as the six-saddle had playability issues given that the strings collided with the adjustment screws on bends and even vibrato.

Thanks! It's an Evan Keith Custom. He's a small builder out of CA. I picked this one up in a recent trade and it's a nice build. Seymour Duncan pups, Tele neck and bridge. Alder body with a maple top and binding. I need to get it to my luthier for a setup and fret dress. Overall, it's a very good guitar.

Ebay find from about a year ago - Warmoth mahogany thinline body with flame koa top, mahogany fatback neck, ebony fingerboard 10-16 radius, Harmonic Design Z90s. Plays great - the only thing I don't love is that the Z90s are not as hot as the Bardens I'm so used to. Plus its too damn pretty. Assembled by Dave Owen at DCO guitars.

Thanks for asking; That Telecaster was designed by Fred Stuart and myself. It's a Masterbuilt Custom Shop one-off, as is the one on the left.............. The list-o-toys is as follows: Parsons/White B/G bender, 1-Texas Special in the bridge, 4-jaguar pickups on the pickguard w/custom shop chrome covers -wired in a variety of ways, a 4-way switchplate from the Bass VI Reissue to switch the 4 jag pickups, binding front and back, binding on the fingerboard, binding on the headstock, odentia/ chrome Fender Telecaster decal, birdseye maple neck, ebony board, 15"- fingerboard radius, 2" width at the nut, the back of the neck is flattened like a classical, to a round farther down towards the body (a compound radius on the back of the neck), and tortise P/W cover on the back. You can"t see the strings on the headstock because they have a red wire insulation around them (slips on easily), for painless "over the nut" bends. Both guitars have matching serial #'s 92454 -- my birthday. Truth be told - I only use 2 settings - One for the tele things, and one for the jazz stuff, that's why the shunt on the 3-way (look close). The number of pickups doesn't seem to affect the string vibration as this guitar rings forever. Fred dubbed this "The Cowboy Pimpmobile Telecaster" on the Custom Shop certificate of authenticity. He was great to work with, and I think he's making pickups now and other custom instruments for himself.

NICE Esquire! Details please.

Thanks, I took the front pup out of my Nocaster (I mainly play on the bridge anyway) and put a MIM Esquire pickgaurd on it. Removing the front pup did seem to make the guitar a little more resonant. I plan on removing the 3-way switch and getting a no-load pot for the tone control.

I think I gotta do it this way. Order the new vintage saddles from Callaham, see if they help here and also on 'modern' Strats. If they help here and the modern brass plate can be saved, then I'll order the 280/290 and 200 sets from Becky and Bill. I'm still afraid to use those pickups with a thin, ferrous bridge plate and if these here plates don't stay, I can't use the Bill and Becky 280/290/200s.

lot of love went into putting this together, my only tele. Body from Ed Roman guitars, his take on a company he bought that was making guitars in Oregon or Washington - has a carve out at the neck to supposedly make playing high on the neck easier, doesn't work but it's a nifty marketing idea . Neck from Warmoth (highly figured maple with mop dots) and that autograph on there if you can see it is Redd Volkeart's (when he signed he said the guitar would then be worth nothing, what a cool guy!). Tuners are Sperzel chrome. Pickups are three Joe Bardens purchased from Fender custom shop. That's a two way tone adjustment, upper knob is treble and lower knob is a midrange boost/cut (5 O'clock position is neutral) that I picked up from Torres Engineering. Standard tele bridge was cut short at my neighbors metal shop so that I could mount the bridge p'up directly into the body to lower the highs (a trick I learned from Gerard Melancon who makes a wicked tele himself). Hope the pics load, never tried that before.

I didn't know whom to ask and then I saw that beautiful red tele with double binding. Hey CSAPO, do you know the color of that one? Is it Candy apple red?
Does anyone know if there is a difference between Candy apple red and Old candy apple red? And if these colors are metallic.
I have been looking for a body like that to add up a maple neck, but I get confused with these color names. I want it with binding ( another binding addict here) and metallic (I have already a few tele so the lady must be in red...). The bodies seem to be available only in Candy apple (for red), the 62 reissue, and Japanese . Is it really the color we see on the pix?

This is a USACG ash 3 piece body in nitro (Gloss Deft and Behlen Fruitwood Toner), de-imaged Squier 51 neck, nitro'd recontoured and graphtech nut and Gotoh 'kluson' tuners. OV Fender pickups like the AV52, Bill Callaham four way switch setup, Stew Mac #0099 and #5167 bridge and saddles assembly, Glendale Machined Jack cup, CTS and Switchcraft, all cloth wire.

Hope you like the ivory pickguard; I cut down and painted an awful white Stew Mac no one would've used as is. Nice fit, the first pickguard of many in this vein.

This four way is real nice, a practical number of real choices.

One more addition to the Telecaster family since I posted in this thread a while back...

My home built all Rosewood Telecaster with a chambered body, Callaham hardware and Lindy Fralin pickups.

Sorry - I should have have said a little something about my Tele! It started life as an ESP 400 Series from the late '80's or early '90's. It had a slab rosewood fingerboard. I had it refretted a few years ago and ended up w/ some unsolvable neck problems so I replaced it w/ a USA Custom Guitars one piece maple neck w/ tall frets. The original neck PU died and is now a Duncan Antiquity Strat. Bridge PU is by Jim Rolph. Bridge plate and other hardware is Jay Montrose's Vintique stuff. The decal is the only real Fender thing on the guitar! I've had a few old Teles over the years - a '51 and a '53, sadly long gone - and this one can hang w/ the best of them!

It's just a picture, isn't it?, not a URL...

Here's the first Tele I ever bought, used in 2005, my 2000 American Standard. I used to have CIJ '62 & '72 Customs, but this one is the one for me. It's also the only electric guitar that I own right now, and haven't had another one since last summer. The dings just endear her to me all the more.

A cowboy orange I built out of swamp-ash. Birds-eye maple neck like a baseball bat. Neck blank came out of the basement of a local luthier who had passed on, sat in my shop for 4 years, and then finally, carved and here.

Thanks Boris. All she needs is a set of Joe Bard pups and I think a Joe B. bridge also. Does anyone use a Joe B. bridge with the cutout? Is it worth the 60-80 ebay bucks? What kind of tone change do you notice, if any?
