jkingma September 29th, 2011, 04:27 PM I wish I had the balls to try and put one of those together.
Maybe some day.
hackworth1 September 29th, 2011, 08:00 PM King,
With your skills, a 5E3 would be a piece of cake. A 5F1 would be terribly simple. The 5F6A Bassman should be built after you have done a 5E3 or two or six.
I am fully confident in your (J Kingma) ability to build a 5E3, even though you have never done one.
Keys: a.) Good soldering makes strong solder joints = good connections. Better to be ugly and strong than pretty and cold. Best to have both pretty and strong. That is the challenge.
b.) Careful eyeballs to see and follow where everything goes according to the layout sheet.
c.) Comprehension of Assembly Steps to easily facilitate assembly. This would be easy for you. Pretty much common sense.
I label all the Resistors. Capacitor Values are generally visibly imprinted on the caps.
(Resistor values charts are easily found on the web.) Bad Boys Ravish Only young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly.
Thanks for your interest.
jkingma September 29th, 2011, 08:17 PM They look like great kits BTW. Some day I'll screw up my courage and be in touch. The thing that will scare me the most is flipping the switch for the first time and waiting for the fireworks.

Ripthorn October 5th, 2011, 11:51 AM What's the typical cost for the iron for these bad puppies? I've had a little hankering for doing a 5f3 with a switch to convert to 5f1 for a little while and those kits are very reasonably priced.
Also, what is the difference between the proluxe and standard 5f3 kits? Looks like tubes, iron, and cab are the only things not included?

Thanks for your inquiry and important question.
For the 5E3, Good Quality F Replacement Transformers can be had for around $100 (for both OT and PT). With the purchase of one of my kits, I am willing to drop ship trannies from www.tubesandmore.com for the prices listed on their site plus shipping, plus 10 percent or so.
Another good source for Chicago-made trannies is is www.triodestore.com. They have a fine transformer set for around $87 plus shipping. Please Order direct.
Weber has good trannies. They offer the excellent Heyboer and China-made that are good. Not expensive. Please order direct.
The Proluxe, I think is a Weber concoction. It has a 5E3 platform with different tubes, bigger iron, and a minimal circuit change. 6L6 power tubes, a 5ar4 (or solid state) rectifier and fixed adjustable bias are also key differences. The normal 5E3 is Cathode Biased with 6V6 tubes and a 5y3 (or solid state) rectifier tube.
For more power in a noisy venue, the Proluxe is a better option (35 watts).
For more refined tonal quality in more intimate venues, the regular 5E3 is preferred (Max 15 watts).
Opinions on this can vary.
AFAIK, there exists no simple method of making a hybrid 5F1 - 5E3. Perhaps one of the sages here (in utmost sincerity, there are a number of brilliant amp builders here) can help you with that.
I suggest keeping it simple and going with a tried and true project.
Please feel free to contact me here, by email, or by phone. Number at my website.
Thanks Again.

Ripthorn October 5th, 2011, 09:35 PM Dave,
I've built a few amps and came up with my own way to do an approximate 5f1-5e3 hybrid. Anyway, those kits look like an incredible value. I'll probably look to get one after it gets really cold here as a good winter project. Thanks for the answers.

This 5f1 Build is complete except for the speaker and Cabinet. She's quiet at idle - NO HUM - and produces great sound and tone. See build details in the DIY Shock Brothers Amp Building Forum First $299 plus $20 shipping takes it. Includes the nice tubes you see here.
