Coil Tap or Series/Parrallel switch?

I hope I'm posting this in the best place!

I've recently bought a Squire 'Vintage Modified' Tele Bass to compliment/back up my Fender (CIJ) '51 Reissue Precision.

Obviously the HB make a very different sound to the single coil on the '51 so I'm contemplating modding the Tele Bass to 'coil tap' the pickup with a push pull pot. I've also read that people are getting good sounds from this bass by wiring a switch to change the pickup from parallel to series operation.

Has anyone got any experience of these kinds of mods and if so which would you recommend?

I set the series/parallel switch on my bass with EB-0 style humbucker next to the neck. In classic mode it's muddy, and in the other one the sound's quite weak and much more quiet. Something in the Bronco/Musicmaster bass sound with lots of mids and lack of the bottom end.
Hope it helps just a bit.

Yeah, I'm more inclined to try the coil tap mod first, I don't want to go from full on roar to weak and wimpy.

I know I won't be able to mimic the sound my '51 makes but I'd like to tame the humbucker a little!

I wouldn't buy this bass as long as I wasn't certain the muddy thump is what I want.
And as the muddy thump IS what I want, I'll buy this baby and the only mod will be th ashtray cover on the bridge. :]

Don't get me wrong, the muddy thump is fantastic, grunts almost like a T bird but I am hoping to get some more subtle tones too.

It's a great bass, highly recommend it. The neck is sweet (easier to play than the '51 too!) but personally I keep away from ash tray covers as I sometimes play with a pick and like to damp the strings with the heel of my hand.
