Thursday I drop in to play with a band I used to be in. They have a practice space about 15x20. I got there and found a spot near the drums to put my amp and I stood in front of it.
The regular guitar player shows up and because of some work that had just be done to the room her amp was about 5 feet out from a corner facing the middle. She proceeds to set up her position behind her amp (open back) and with the corner PA speaker in her ear, literally 18" away.
After we play a couple songs she says, "will you guys turn down, I can hear myself". Big surprise.
 I turned her amp around to face her and told her to turn the PA speaker away from her head.
We continued to play and nobody had any volume issues.

I see 2 problems working simultaneously here.

The problem I see is 'PA speaker'. We gave up using a PA for rehearsals ages ago and instead just use a little acoustic combo for the vocals. This forces us to keep everything else down to manageable volumes and makes for a much more comfortable time all round.
And Old Cane, we have a 'she' in our band and she's just great - plays well, has a great attitude...wouldn't be without her. But you were kidding, right?

I don't think Old Cane was denigrating women in general, just the specific player - which is a 'she' by coincidence.

Years ago I learned the value of owning my own PA. later I learned that monitors are more important than FOH speakers. I find that if the band can hear themselves, they play better. The better the bands play, that energy transfers to the audience. Which in turns feeds the band.
Recently I invested in a set of in-ear monitors for or lead singer. It was the first rehearsal we walked away from that he didn't complain about something :)
