Nigel Planer (Neil from "The Young ones") covering Pink Floyd, Traffic and Donovan [Archive]

Not many know this but in the mid eighties Comedian Nigel Planer and Eurythmics guitarist/ top producer Dave Stewart got together to record what must have been one of the most "Far out" and underrated albums from that decade.

"Neil's heavy Concept Album" saw Planer revive his best known character: the Hippie from the sitcom "The Young ones"

The album itself was a hoshposh from skits, silly acoustic numbers, early rap, Crooning (a Frank Sinatra-like version of the Sex Pistols' "God save the queen" anybody?) and even heavy metal.

But staying true to the Hippie Character, there were three cover version of very hippie songs which are by far the best tracks of that album. So here they are.

Traffic's "Hole in my shoe" as performed by Neil at Top of the pops, the vocals are live.

Pink Floyd's "Gnome song", it doesn't really differ that much from the original.

Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy man" showing that even with a slick eighties production (And let's be honest, Dave Stewart got his reputation for a very good reason, the man KNOWS how to get a good sound in the studio) this song still sounds good.
