The Olde Band Reunites

I've been part of an acoustic Celtic band for 13 years. A couple of years ago we took a break as the singer and guitarist decided to take some time off. There were some issues they needed to deal with. Some that to me will probably never be resolved.

The bassist, fiddler and I started doing a few gigs as a trio, but then the fiddler took a job in Abu Dabi for a year. She's back home now and while I was on vacation, the four of them played a couple of shows and were pretty happy with the results.

Tonight I returned to the fold, We mostly jawboned about what we want to do and caught up on gossip. But finally we got the instruments out and played for about 45 minutes. It's funny. We started playing some tunes and before I knew it, my fingers started hitting the right notes and it sounded pretty good. I feel that we have a lot of work ahead of us to get back to the level we left it and to go beyond that. All of us want to learn new material and move forward.

We have someone who wants to take us on to help with booking and promotion with a good track record and a good stash of contacts. I just hope we can live up to our potential. I feel that sometimes in the past we shot ourselves in the foot not meeting the standard of professionalism we were hired to perform at. And we lost some good gigs because of it. I guess I'm optomistic that we are older and wiser now. This time if it's not working, I have no qualms about saying it out loud or walking if it comes to that. I'm not the person I was two years ago. I survived a life-threatening illness and I want to make the best of the time I have left. I'm not going to waste my time if it turns into the same ol' same ol'. I also have another musical project or two going.

No real point other then to write about it to lay out my feelings and do a little reality check. Feel free to comment or ask questions.

Congrats on getting back with people you know. Sometimes it can be an issue.

I may start a new thread on this...but, geez, a lot of us are over 50 and still at it. So why? It's not like we're going to be rock stars.

Actually I am going to start a new thread...Congrats again and if you ever get down to New Mexico give us a shout.
