chunky neck 335 type guitar suggestions

I have come here grovelling once again for your fine words of wisdom.
This forum helped me greatly in choosing my first tele guitar (Baja) that wonderful neck has now created a problem.

I cannot get to grips with the neck on my Ibanez artcore AF75, I'm finding the shape all wrong now,which I am now selling. I was wondering what is the best thicker shaped neck 335 style guitar to be had in the price range of £200-300 second hand. Not much of a budget I know, but it will be playing second fiddle to my Baja.

The Epiphone DOT has a nice chunky neck and it should be easily found used in your price range.

I would have to disagree. I believe the Dots have the 60's Slim Taper, which is not chunky whatsoever. For me, the sizes go LP Studio 50's chunky, Casino is right in the middle, and Dot is super slim.

I have been looking for the same thing for years. I have always wanted a chunky neck 335, but the only one they make is $4000. All the other 335's, including the cheaper satin model, have 60's Slim Taper :sad:

The Gibson ES339 is a Les Paul sized ES335 and comes available with a 59 neck as well as the slimmer 60's neck. I have sounded the virtues (as have many others) of this brilliant guitar on so many other occasions .... that I will resist the opportunity to do so again. But it really is a cracker ...... it's also a Custom shop guitar and costs a heck of a lot less than the ES335.

I've never seen a DOT with a 60's slim taper.

Just search TDPRI from google and you'll see many people commenting on the big chunky neck on the DOT.

I doubt it, - not even used, but the ES339 has been around for a few years now, so you never know.

My own ES339 was bought under similar circumstances, whilst waiting to get a new hollow bodied Epi that I had ordered .... and re-ordered.

I was looking to buy a new John Lennon Casino, but the two new ones I checked out both had annoying cosmetic flaws, and although they sounded fine, it meant re-ordering yet another new one. It was then that I crossed paths with the ES 339 with a choice of necks, colours and what have you. All there in front of me - five, ready to try out. I bought a sunburst version with the 59 neck and I just love it.

Since then I have seen used ones of varying prices and have a friend who bought a nice one used. They can possibly be had for not too much more than our Welsh friend is budgeting. Might be worth checking out, as I said - or even waiting a little longer to save up a few more pounds. I guarantee the wait will be more than worthwhile.

I was just repeating the price range he gave. I'm wondering when the Epiphone versions of the ES-339 become available.

You have to be careful. What sometimes happens is some chap buys guitar model X with what he sees as a chunky neck and tells people about it. A few years later someone else buys same model guitar and says 'hey that ain't chunky'.

It could be the first guy's idea of chunky differs from the second guy's, or the manufacturer changed the specs on the guitar, or whoever sanded the necks on the day one of the guitars was made screwed up.

I speak from experience - generally speaking, be careful of buying a guitar sight unseen based on a description of the neck profile. Better to go guitar shopping in the real world if you can. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but be aware of the risk.

What year was your Dot? Mine was a 2004 and it was slim. I recall them putting 60's slim in the description then. Now I looked, and both MF and GC have no neck description and have made other changes since mine. Maybe they are chunky now? Mine DEFINITELY wasn't though.

I couldn't tell you to be honest it was used and i didn't have it long, maybe around 2006, it was a rounded profile though.

Same with mine. It`s about the same thickness as in my Gibson Les Paul Junior. Not very thick, but not a toothpick either.

My DOT Studio has a chunky, "D" shaped neck, meaning that it has thicker "shoulders" than any of my "C" shaped necks. I found that characteristic to be more troublesome than any other neck I had ever played until I got used to it. Now it's a piece of cake; one of my favorites!

I have come here to humbly apologize. I just went to my local Guitar Center on the way home from work and played a bunch of instruments. I, regardless of this thread, have been pondering replacing my Casino, so I used it as two birds with one stone.

With that being said, now to the apology. They new Dots have huge necks. I am talking '59 status... So to Progrmr & Chris, YOU were right. The NOW have large necks; my apologies. My 2004 Dot though, did have a slim neck.

Now finally, to the OP. The new Dots have HUGE necks.

P.S. The Quality Control was not good on both Gibson and GC's effort. I would take pride in my store and set everything up properly, but that is another discussion. 1 out of the 3 Dots played OK, not great. But better than the other 2 trash.

My 2009 Dot's neck is chunkier than my 2001 SG Special's but not as chunky as my U-shaped Thinline Tele's.

The Studio Dot - paradoxically "dotless" - has a monster Neck.

Further I see no reason for You to apologize for anything as you were correct about the Standard Dot not being a tree trunk.

Well thankyou all for your input so far, buying a guitar is never easy no matter what the budget. Just when you think you've narrowed the options down, and it's settled something else pops up to distract you.

In the case of the Epiphone Dots it seems that my case has been solved providing I buy a newer one, (that isn't straight forward as I'm not sure if it's a myth or not that the newer chinese ones are inferior to the earlier Korean ones). however I am tempted to wait for the arrival of the Epiphone 339 as the smaller body seems really tempting, plus it seems to be an upgrade on the epi 335. However the neck is described as having a slim taper neck with jumbo frets which doesn't sound what I'm looking for.

I can safely rule out saving for a Gibson 339 new they are going for £1,400, second hand for around £1,100 on ebay at the moment :(

Washburn and Vintage models seem to be in my price range so I may have to look at some of those, but I don't know an awful lot about their guitars.

It is great to hear about the 339 and the fatter neck. I have an early nineties korean Epi Sheraton that is a real nice guitar but it has a thinner neck and no matter how I try I just can't seem to get around on it like I want to. I'll have to go and try some 339's.

The Dots I have tried lately all have fat necks, as do the Casinos, which suits me fine. As to quality, they are hit and miss. I mostly dislike the pickups, and I know the electronics are sub par.
