GeetarPlayer August 17th, 2011, 10:12 AM Hi.
I have a VG Strat. It has a Strat setting, and a Tele setting. I default to the Strat, when playing worship songs. Everything sounds like a strat to me. The only exception is the lush hi-gain power chords of a Humbucker. (And the VG has a setting for that too, so I'm good with that).
So, can you help me develop my strat/tele ear here?
If you could, please point me to some exemplary mainstream (e.g. Hillsong, Baloche, Tomlin, etc) worship songs that are the epitome of "Strat" sound, and then some that are the epitome of "Tele" sound?
Thanks so much!
Teleworshipkid August 17th, 2011, 11:23 AM It's basically learning to discern chime from twang.
GeetarPlayer August 17th, 2011, 04:38 PM Anyone with some specific songs that illustrate the difference clearly?
SixShooter August 17th, 2011, 09:12 PM I also have a Strat and a Tele that I play at church. The Tele bridge has a cutting edge to it. It's very articulate. The Strat is smoother. I seem to use my Strat more often because it seems to fit the songs better. I'm listening to Lincoln Brewster right now and I think I usually use the Tele for his stuff. But I could easily use the Strat too.

mrSlush50 August 18th, 2011, 12:38 AM It's funny, I often have trouble telling what guitar's are being played on worship albums. it's easier on live recordings than on studio tracks. Maybe this has something to do with the over processed sound of most modern worship music?
to the op, I'm afraid I can't think of any specific examples of telecaster specific tone in the worship music that I listen too. Several players use Strat's almost exclusively (Brewster specifically) but I can't think of anyone who uses a tele as their primary axe. I know Jack from Crowder*Band has one, but it seems most of his work is done on Gibson style guitars.
Teleworshipkid August 18th, 2011, 01:03 AM Modern Studio Worship is a very humbucker-y, Vox-y genre... You know, cause The Edge used 'em (I'm surprised nobody is using Explorers! I like the feel and look of them, but haven't bought one yet :(. )
Another thing that I keep seeing are deusenburgs (I think I spelled that right), which use mini (almost filtertron-ish) humbuckers ...
fuddy August 18th, 2011, 11:54 AM The styles of these songs are way different, but here are a couple examples...
Tele (albeit with humbuckers)

SamClemons August 18th, 2011, 12:04 PM I think a strat is going to give you the tone of the influences listed above Hillsong/Lincoln brewster type stuff. You are going to have to move more into the southern rock/country old time hymn type stuff to use a tele. Bands that come to mind are David Crowder, Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Todd Agnew....
I pretty much use a strat with a humbucker in the bridge for everything except acoustic.

I know that, but my preference is to use a Tele for most of his songs.
I also use my Tele on Revelation Song.
I think I use my Tele on songs where I want the guitar to stand out a little from the other instruments. I use the Strat on songs where I want it to blend. It doesn't matter what the recording artist uses, it's more the type of sound I want to create for my bands interpretation of the song.

I think a tele can pull it all off. But what the OP was asking was about the artists' RECORDINGS. Telling him that Brewster is tele music isnt really helping... But I do see what you mean..

That's not what I said. Read more carefully:

Okay, what I meant is that you saying that you use a tele for his music isn't going to help him identify it as a strat on the record. Actually, quite the opposite. My bad for not clarifying...
