mike shaw August 7th, 2011, 11:16 PM I've got a few guitar cases that were 'christened' internally by one of our cats.
I using that enzyime urine remover and it's working well. After this, I will go and clean with our carpet cleaning machine. Finally, a few days open in the sunshine should finish it up.
Anyway, I have some sections of the furry liner that have come loose and am wondering what is the best adhesive to use to re-attach it. At this point, most of the section are relatively small so a spray adhesive might not be the best bet but that could change after I finish cleaning.
So, any ideas? Obviously I would need something that won't react with a guitar finish either by contact or outgassing.
Thanks!
RedDirt August 7th, 2011, 11:42 PM First, skin the cats.
Boil hide to make glue . . . .

In this situation, I think I'd use an organic adhesive made from a fresh cat hide......but that's just me.

+1. My cats pissed on my table saw and jointer and it turned the metal black, nothing I tried can get it out. Then they hit my mattress and sofa. Told them next time it happens I cut your jewels off. Did you know cats can flip you off with their tail? I guess they thought I was kidding . A trip to the vet and the problem(s) was fixed.
The liner is probably held on with contact cement.
Deeve August 7th, 2011, 11:54 PM Gents - our girl cats, Betty and Minnie only *rest* in my open cases; they pee outdoors or in a box downstairs.
Boy cats can be unpredictable.
Peace - Deeve
mike shaw August 7th, 2011, 11:55 PM Nah, it wasn't the cats fault - she was old and died shortly thereafter.
"+1. My damn cats pissed on my table saw and jointer and it turned the metal black, nothing I tried can get it out."
That's how the hinges and clasps look. Those will be replaced!
Shepherd August 7th, 2011, 11:57 PM Sorry to hear that.
mike shaw August 8th, 2011, 12:02 AM Thanks! She had a long. long life and was healthy until the end.
Shepherd August 8th, 2011, 12:27 AM So far they have behaved.

guitarbuilder August 8th, 2011, 07:14 AM Nature's Miracle in the red bottle...advanced... works very well but it is almost 40 dollars a gallon.
mike shaw August 8th, 2011, 11:42 AM We tried Natures Miracle in the white bottle and red label. Wasn't impressed! We used something called Ewwww from Bissell that seems to be doing it. I think the key is to keep the spot wet with cleaner. I sprayed down the case interior and closed the lid and that kept the fabric moist for a day or so.
Shepard, looks like you got a double necker there! Actually, your gold one looks like our Hunny and the black looks like our Oreo.
cstamper August 8th, 2011, 12:18 PM I had an old case that I had to repair - put on some new clasps. I had to pull the lining from the top in order to reach the other sides of the clasp rivets/screws. I used rubber cement to glue the lining back on because that's what the stuff already on there looked like to me. It worked great! The hardest part was finding the stuff; think I got it at Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Shepherd August 8th, 2011, 01:23 PM You can also try a homebrew recipe of spraying a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water, let it sit a few minutes and dry off. Apply a handful of baking soda over the affected area and drizzle it with a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Work it in with a scrubbing brush. Let it dry then vacuum.
oldsoultroy August 8th, 2011, 01:56 PM with 4 cats and 2 dozen cases in my house.... I am feeling very fortunate, they are good litter boxers. My Cattle Dog however has had a few "YOU LEFT ME ALONE TO LONG!!!" ordeals, but thankfully never on my musical equipment. He did ruin a few choice books such as my 28$ 2 week old copy of Luthier Tools. That one really hurt! Good luck all on your stain/smell removal..... My day will come I am sure :)
Shorecaster August 8th, 2011, 04:34 PM I'm sorry I read this thread. My wife at the time a long time ago, had a cat that wizzed in the burner of our stove. Didn't know that until the wife started cooking one evening.
I'll never get that metallic/burnt urine smell out of my head. Gotta go barf now....
mike shaw August 8th, 2011, 05:42 PM Thanks for all the replies guys. I had no idea that this 'unmentionable' problem was so widespread!
Shepard, I'll keep you concoction in mind. Didn't MythBusters have a similar solution for skunk smell?
Shorecaster, I know your pain. There was a male cat outside that sprayed my tire. Ugh, what a stench!! I'd imagine your odor take funk to a new level!
I've decided, based on all of your recommendations to go with the contact cement. I bought a good sized can a while ago and never used it. I think I was going to tolex a cab and never got around to it.
mgdesigns August 8th, 2011, 10:21 PM I had 2 factory issued Martin 0-series cases that stank to high 4377. I called & complained they sent me another one that stank also. I call the Customer service guy and said he'd never heard of such a thing. He had one case left in the whole factory like mine. I told him go get it, unpack it and open it up and leave the room for lunch. When he got back he said send the 2 cases back and he refunded the money. Bad batch of hide glue from case maker's plant in Mexico plant. The first one I had for 3 years and it never got better; left open, outside, dryer sheets in it, Fabreezed it, you name it I tried it. Skunk Case.
Just an aside - if you ever buy a stinky case, you'll know there's nothing to do but return it.
