Hank Marvin is such a cool guy. love his playing. his was the 1st Stratocaster in England, i believe.

that Strat sound is unmistakable... Fender must have sold a lot of new strats after those Shadows instrumentals....

I reckon it would have brought a tear to Leo's eyes as well... to hear/see something he put together..

funny, just the other day Hanks name came up in conversation, someone mentioned he has a place in West Oz.. ?.. his escape place?...winter retreat?..

are we the sometime home of Hank now?. cool...

The Shadows had a huge influence on we old gits before the Mersey sound emerged in 1963.
And although Hank was the frontman, Bruce had just as much to do with the composing and arranging. I learned to play rhythm guitar by listening to Bruce.

But lets make a mention of composer, Jerry Lordan - without him, the Shads would have been a few big hits short.

I just completed my Hank B Marvin look-a-like strat, with aged gloss maple neck.

Not really .No-one could afford one in the UK or even get to see one .We all used Hofners and Burns and dreamed.When I finally got a red strat I preferred my Tele but that was decades later .:grin:

He is a Jehova's Witness as well. Its not relevant but the only other fact I know about him!:razz:

If you check out the easy surf thread I started in Tabs, Tips,etc, someone posted a how to play Apache youtube link which is very good indeed.

Looks easy, sounds simple. Dead difficult to nail - you have to be Hank.

Highly under-rated player now is Hank, but not at the time, he was the best.
Everyone and their dog tried to copy Hank, and failed.

Jerry Lordan composed Apache (whilst on a tube train?) for Bert Weedon who recorded the first version, then demoed it on ukulele to The Shadows' Jet Harris...

When Hank got the strat (it was not that fiesta red then, it was flamingo pink!) there were still import restrictions in place. Hence Hofners and Burns. The Burns were probably better than the Fender strat, lots of technical innovations, even Gretsch used the Burns tremolo under license. Hank upgraded to a Burns too.

I think that's true. Cliff ordered it for Hank to play and officially it still belongs to him (Cliff, that is). It's had quite a history including a couple of refinishes, to white and back to the original shade. But it's been in Bruce's possession for yonks and it looks very much to me as if it's that very instrument he's playing in the "Young Lovers" video clip.

In my view The Shadows attained a level of tightness and refinement that has never been equalled by any other instrumental line-up of that kind. They've engendered countless imitators, some extremely successful (The Ventures, The Spotnicks, for example), but to me none of them has had that special something that only the Shads possessed. Not bad, considering that they started off as (and also remained for many years) Cliff Richard's backing group.

Not only that, but their influence goes beyond just instrumental pop tunes. Even if what they're best known for isn't your cup of tea, it should be said that they inspired a lot of later guitar heroes in their early days and their very 4-piece line-up became the template for generations of Pop and Rock bands.

The way I play now is very influenced by Hank. I hadn't heard of the Shads until my late 20's but I'm so glad I found them when I did. I mostly love really pretty music and in my book the Shads set the bar.
