Dave_O July 17th, 2011, 11:23 PM My better half and myself take our grand-daughter to church so she can make some good friends, and see the world a little differently. About 3 months ago I started getting these little whispers that I should talk to the vicar (Anglican Church) about joining the music group. Then one week the whisper became quite insistent, so I sought her out after the service. It turned out that on the Tuesday before, the man who had steered the music-in-service had passed away, and they were going to need some new folks to pick up the ball. I have almost no knowledge of ecclesiastic music, but I'm a quick learner:mrgreen:
So I had a meeting with the new organist (Rodney) and we ran through a few things. Luckily all the music used during the Eucharist is charted out in block diagrams for numbskulls like myself, so I grabbed my Yamaha APX7 electric/acoustic and leapt in to the fray on Sunday. Just organ and guitar, but it sounded quite nice at times.
It was a bit scratchy, but the high point for me was my little Jorgia coming up and hugging onto me while I was playing, saying to her friends "This is my Poppy"...
ChickenKiller July 17th, 2011, 11:53 PM Good job bro. Keep playing to give Him praise.
LiveOak July 18th, 2011, 09:15 AM Good for you! A most uplifting story that brightened my Monday morning. Please keep it up and play for that audience of one.
Getting up there at Church with my Strat for the first time 8 years ago was one of the best and most positive life changing things I have done in my life. Lot's of Church players on here, so welcome!
Thighbanez July 18th, 2011, 12:25 PM Awesome!! Congratulations!
Southpaw Tele July 18th, 2011, 12:43 PM Congratulations! I started playing at our church back in '08 and I spent the first six months playing with my guitar's volume close to zero. I gained some confidence and have learned a LOT about the technical aspects of playing and playing live. Have fun!
Parma_TeleMon July 18th, 2011, 06:25 PM Very, very cool! I used to rock a CPX10 on Sundays. If you're not careful, this could change your life.
hotraman July 18th, 2011, 07:17 PM Awesome!
Glad to read that you were willing to play.
Keep being available!
SatelliteOrders July 18th, 2011, 07:46 PM I've played in church on Wednesdays for over ten years and on Sundays every other week for just over two. Nothing quite like playing regularly in front of people to get you to get your technique together.
Thinlineggman July 21st, 2011, 01:43 PM A year after joining the church I got into the praise team on bass and loved it. A certain sound guy seems to hate the low end though, so every 3 weeks was terrible for me because of the fighting and terrible mix:/ now, 3 years later, I play guitar and my girlfriend plays bass and we're both loving life playing live every Sunday (that sound guy finally straightened out his act).
dan1952 July 21st, 2011, 01:55 PM Be vewwy, vewwy quiet...
cpd73mc July 21st, 2011, 05:04 PM Fantastic!! I am an Anglican bishop and am rector of a small parish and my assistant priest and I play our guitars almost every week. We have a pianist but my priest and I usualy do the praise and worship portion. We'll play anything from contemporary P&W to Elvis. Keep after it Brother!
soundchaser59 July 21st, 2011, 05:59 PM .....the high point for me was my little Jorgia coming up and hugging onto me while I was playing, saying to her friends "This is my Poppy"...
And that, of course, means she will eventually get her friends to show up, and it snowballs from there!
Rick Towne July 22nd, 2011, 12:02 AM Believe it or not, AU is one of the top sources of current worship music, and the oft-derided dotted eight delay epidemic. You'll not look back.

I plan on playing acoustic only- as a backup to the organist, who really knows this material.
I get a big enough dose of rock-out volume at the band gigs I do (country rock band, and now I'm also in a Stones tribute...)
I'm personally not into the big production thing for playing in a 160yo 50-seat building, but whatever floats your boat I suppose:grin:
cpd73mc July 22nd, 2011, 08:11 AM I'd love to see a pic of the building, Dave.
Dave_O July 22nd, 2011, 08:39 AM Check here, mate.

TxTeleMan July 22nd, 2011, 09:05 AM I started playing (electric) guitar in church when I was 16 or so... around 1971 or so, at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Houston. I've played in lots of churches, from Episcopal folk mass and hymns to non-denominational contemporary, from 1971 up through 2011. I've also played in numerous bands.
I agree with SatelliteOrders that there's nothing quite like playing regularly in front of people to get you to get your technique together.
There is something I don't know. What does "charted out in block diagrams" mean?

Chord graphs, I believe?
cpd73mc July 22nd, 2011, 01:31 PM Nice building Dave.
