Custom bridge no caster pickup

Is the bottom zinc plate on a tele custom shop bridge pickup supposed to be connected to the rest of the pickup some way. Mine has the soldered wire connected from the plate to the pickup which I'm guessing is the ground but the plate is loose. The plate is secured that way but is not connected any other way. Is this plate supposed to be heated or something to connect it?

Not at all...I just got one..plug and play..now if you had a duncan neck..that is another question/issue! they dont play well with each other
