Nice to hear new stuff but I'm afraid it's kind of genericy-watered-down ZZ Top.

I was expecting more, I guess.

Did Rick Rubin produce this track? It sounds more like a bad Bon Jovi's song than the raw "back to the roots" ZZ Top expecting.

Yeah.......... um........ Oh gosh. NO.
That mess is like somebody was told to knock out a song that "sounded like" some ZZ Top. And they would then've been ridiculed for the result. Rightly.
A bad parody.
WOW. Gettin' old is ROUGH. Hope my memory goes a bit more, soon - so I won't remember when some things were so much better.

Hey it's their stab at having another hit, like at least a few spins here and there, can't blame em for that. And it's not all THAT bad, IMO. yeah dumb chorus fer sure, but the verse section is cool.

It's just fairly standard ZZ stuff. Nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, I quite like it!!! There, someone's said it!!!!!

I can see the chorus being quite catchy if you hear it as often as we've all heard 'Tush' or 'Legs' or any of their other big ones. They just need to get the lovely ladies and the video camera going again and this could be a new MTV hit.

Let's be honest, unless BFG found a totally new tone to use (and that ain't gonna happen) we may as well accept that all the songs are going to sound similar - check the vid of the rig rundown where his tech explains how they eq all the guitars to sound like Pearly Gates!!

I started laughing when the chorus kicked in.

I wondered if it was a russian clone/joke, but it sure does sound like "modern" ZZ top.

Sadly, it'll get airplay because of the chorus. And all the women in the front row of every ZZ Top concert, that sit placidly and politely thru the entire concert and then get up and excitedly dance to the 80s hits in the last part of the show, will love it and say its their best ever.

(about the 80s chicks at the shows... I'm not making it up, I've seen it several times now)

Take out the chorus and it sounds like it came off of Rhythmeen. Add it back, it sounds like it might've been the second choice for the theme to Friends ...

OK, after one hundred listens and learning the solo at 2:19-2:58 I've decided that it's not Rhythmeen quality but for Eliminator-on era ZZ, it ain't bad....

The one I like is "Going So Good". That's a good song. But the album on its own is not great, IMHO. Tried to listen to it again the other day and it still doesn't do it for me. So much so that I've never listened to it past track 6... It's that bad.

Seems very elimator ish to me too.

I don't mind it for what it is.....obviousley a stab at a radio friendly track/single.

Sure as guitarists we like the earlier, groovy stuff but as a businessman or musician making a living whats better?

We are a very small and niche audience, not to mention exceedingly difficult to please.....

The storage alone on his 800 + guitars must cost a fortune let alone his entourage and running costs....

This new song can get grittier in the instrumental department. And I agree with all that's said on the chorus; they should ditch it.

Starting to think it is maybe fake, or an early demo.

- drums sound too computer-y demo like
- guitars normally sound way better
- that chorus...
- it's posted from the Russian ZZ Top club... how would they get hold on a genuine track like this?

On the 'young' sounding voice: I bet that's his vocals being reworked with some autotune.

Possibly so, but having heard that track I just wish they had stopped trying to be 'on top' of anything, and semi retired to enjoy their wealth and guitar collections - and to just be themselves. As a band or individuals.

If you heard that chorus played by a 'local bar band' you would cringe at the apparent naivety, at how derivative it is, and its generally embarrassing awfulness.
The fact it is ZZ Top makes it 10 times worse.

There has regularly been sweet spots and mud patches in ZZ Tops history.

But I simply wish I had not ever heard that chorus.

tuuur

The worst thing is... That chorus is playing in my head right now. And even worse... There's a chance this is going to be their biggest hit to date given its radio-friendliness.

When The Rev said in a interview they were going back to the beginning, I was hoping he meant along the lines of Degüello....

Wow, I hope that's something they did for a commercial or movie and not what the new album is going to be like.

I havent heard Shanias... is it bad? I always wondered if she would even try to do more music without Mutt. Apparently David Foster, the acclaimed producer from Canada, is in charge this time.

To me, those albums should have been titled Mutt Lange featuring Shania Twain.

The big flaw is the production. Not so much because it's overdone just that it seems inconsistent. I'm guessing this is a demo. If they went full blown 80's ZZ Top production with the song it could be very cool. Especially if they roll out a new video with girls. But I am easy to please, I actually loved XXX.

I have to agree about the chorus. Suddenly they turned into .38 Special. I'll give the album a shot, though....

Wally
August 6th, 2011, 05:41 PM
IT doesn't sound as if that is a finished product.....although many here have pronounced it DOA! LOL I have heard better....and I have heard worse. IT just rock and roll....which is what ZZ Top is all about...all they have ever been about. Great pole dancin' tuen if you have the right girls working, right?

Two observations...
1) The deal with Billy G's EQ process has been public knowledge for a couple of decades now...at least.

2) There is not nearly enough cow bell. I gotta have more cowbell! I suppose Will Ferrell was not available????

to paraphrase that little old band from liverpool....

"Let me hear your cowbells ringing out,
Come and bring your cowboy home!
I'm back, I'm back, I'm back
in the U.S. of A."

Okay, another observation.....I have watched a total of 3 minutes of 'Glee'...no mas, por favor; that's enough....and so I am of the opinon that if someone can watch 'Glee' long enough to relate tha show to any other thing might not be the best rock and roll reviewer anyway, right?

eeeeeehaw.....

Some people think that everything after Fandango to be a waste. I am not of that opinion...just saying that people have been dogging that Little old band from TExas for decades now.

Another observation......anyone...male at least...who doesn't like to see women get up and boogie has more issues at hand (?) than what Z.Z. Tops' latest song sounds like!

"She's got legs,
And she knows how to use them."

Another.....eeeeeeehaw.....

Ya'll have a good one...

It's too late to listen to the whole thing but the first track "gotsta get paid" is pretty damn good. Here is the track list that I copied from Rhapsody:

Heartache in Blues sounds lowdown...i like it.

There's a good article in the August Texas Monthly regarding Gibbons and I Gotsa Get Paid. Seems he lifted it from Houston rapper DJ DMD's Twenty Five Lighters (1998).

xJRBdLpTesozPtFb77Gmtk

I see Billy as following his vision as honestly as anyone has at his level of success. No one hits a home run with every at bat but he's still swinging. And it seems that criticism would be more valid if offered by someone with a similar history and experience. If Redd Volkaert or Duke Levine would just post an opinion-but they're probably busy playing.

At the time it was written many considered it ubber cheesy (still is kinda) but as cool and blues rawk as billy and zz are, they are kinda campy and always have been. That is part of their allure.
