Low Output Pickups

I am looking for some low output pickups to drop into a Mexican Standard. I am shooting for a very traditional country sound, ala Don Rich and James Burton. Cleans with a bunch of twang are a must. The standard pickups that come with this guitar are quite a bit hotter than I would like.

I like my Duncan Antiquity a lot. 6.26k, clean vintage twang for miles. But then again, just installed a Klein Broadcaster in my Esquire, it's 10.2k, but to my ears nails that James Burton super twangy clean tone ( think Lonesome Fugitive solo ). So I don't think the resistance alone dictates the tone. Could be wrong, though. That has happened before...

Don Mare has a great low output pickup that is not on his website - it's a Nocaster pickup, and I think the numeric designation is 5521, although I could be wrong. DC resistance is under 6k ohms, as I recall.

Something to try before you start swapping pickups: If you have a short low capacitance cable and plug into the 2nd (padded) input at the amp, you should get considerable high end extension and not have to worry about the pickup driving the amp's input stage. Of course, your problem could easily be a poor quality pickup full of shorts, but if it's the color or the output that's bothering you, this could potentially take you far for not much money.

Check out the Fezzter Oildale Tele set. I don't think you'll get a better sounding pick up for the price or double the price.
