damage to nitro finish

Bought a Fender stand for my Hwy 1 Tele - Daphne blue - and the guy said it would be fine for the finish. Wrongo. Now I've got yellow stains on the bottom. Is there a fix that's not a refinish or am I screwed?

None that I'm aware of.

go to autopaint jobber/supplier get some Meguires diamond cut polish and a soft terry cloth towel and buff away....might take awhile but should work.

Greg Rogers (GRGuitars.com) has an accessory called a 'stand bra' for about 10 bucks. It's a set of 3 plush covers that go over the 3 normal contact points on your guitar stand. I've used them for a while now and my ReRanch nitro butterscotch blond partscaster lives on the stand with no more problems. The very same stand (without the covers) melted through the previous nitro finish on that guitar.

I put them on any stands around the house now - I'm up to 4 sets currently - and I never think about it anymore. Makes a $15 stand into a $25 stand - but no nitro worries.

I also use what is called a "Guitar Bra" to cover the headstock part of my stands. I also used an old flannel shirt that I ripped into strips and wound around the bottom of the stands where the guitars contact any rubber parts.

Actually, before I found these things I used to put black socks over the rubber parts. My wife didn't approve of those after a while and this is what I settled on. If you don't need 'fancy', there are plenty of ways to do it for 'free'.

I've done it and it can work. However, if it doesn't happen with a reasonable amount of buffing then give it up. You can buff for quite a long time but it is possible to work you way through the finish if you are excessive about it.

Highway Ones are made in a way where its hard to NOT get relic-ed. Just saying, you gotta be real careful with those.

I got a pal who has the first run H1s, J-Bass in daphne blue. He hardly practices at home. In a year he has cool top of pickup finger wear, strap wear and the back is nicely checked. 3 years later its looks well used, but the bugger is a lazy cow.

thanks - I knew it would wear over time and that's cool. These stains don't really give off that vibe. But, stupid is as stupid does. I should have known better. I like to keep it out so the bra concept sounds good. Thanks for all the quick responses

I wouldn't worry about it. You have just added character to your new guitars. HWY 1 finishes are made to wear quickly, so I think you would be wasting your efforts trying to polish it out. Plus you would polish the ass end of your guitar to high gloss, and the rest would be satin. You would then have to take the guitar apart, and polish the entire body to a gloss to make it match.

There no need to spend $10 for a fuzzy "Stand Bra". Just get yourself some felt or a piece of flannel. Cut it into strips and fold it over and sew the edges together to make sleeves to slip over the rubber tubing. If you don't have sewing capability, an office stapler will do the job.

A single sheet of felt, about 8.5"x11" that you buy at walmart is ~ 50 cents. I use that stuff for a lot of stuff, but never thought to put it on my guitar stands.

Colt has a point if the finish is not gloss than your buffing will result in shiney areas so keep that in mind.....
