problem with pick ups

I have an 1988 American standard tele which (as I am mainly an acoustic player) has been little used. My grandson has now taken an interest, but when it is plugged in there is very poor response from the high E string.
This is the same on all pick up settings. We have tried raising the pick up without success. Does anyone have any ideas to remedy this

Welcome to the forum. You'll get a better response to your question if you post it in the Tele technical area at http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-technical/ but to start off I'd ask a couple of questions... by highest to you mean thinnest string or the one furthest from the ground? By "poor response" do you mean quiet or that it isn't sustaining? When you play it unplugged is it still exhibiting the same problem? Have you turned the volume and tone up full when you're testing it?

I am referring to the thin E string. The string is fine unplugged but its amplified response is only about 30 per cent of the volume of the other strings

look how the string is seated at the nut and saddle
is the problem just this string or there over many strings?
have you tried one string larger diameter?

welcome! you should ask this question on the main forum. You'll get more answers. High E string sounds often weaker than the others. You can trus to change the equalizing setup of your amp. Or the gauge of the strings. Or the type of the strings. Can come from many things.
