About 17 years ago I gave up my job as a talent agent to become a stockbroker. I figured that I had to do something to make use of my expensive college education. It didn't take long for me to figure out that I'd rather be in the music business, so for the past 12 years or so I have been doing both. I'm self-employed, so it's not a problem to juggle both businesses.

I used to be a full time producer/musician but than the recording industry colapsed and I had to use my Economics master to start working as a private banker.
Than the Greek stockmarket TOTALLY colapsed (if you think that you guys had a stockmarket fall you have to be jocking!) and 90% of financial advising companies closed (mine too) and lived for a year doing internet research for a Greek phone company and repairing/building guitars and designing rigs and playing music AND producing but than the EURO came (and I suddenly found out together with 10 million Greeks that I am VERY POOR and can't live with the $500 basic monthly salary!) and I had to RE-USE my economics master and get a job as a systems and methods manager in a large Super Market which I think will NEVER colapse because Greeks still eat to survive (at least for the time being!!)
BTW I still produce and write music on the side ALL the time!!

If I could be 20 years old again I'd go to recording engineers school and get into that side of the music biz. Once I got my home studio all set up, I quickly realized that doing this for a living would be awesome. Pretty early on it became apparent that becoming a rock star wasn't going to happen so I opted for college, marriage, kids, etc. But my heart sure isn't into my work...I get a whole lot more satisfaction from playing guitar, recording my own stuff and surfing guitar forums. Anyone else finding themself at this point, feeling like you missed the boat by not making your career music related?

... assemblies, setups, maintenance, repairs. I do this full time for both my own customers and customers of a local music emporium. After "retiring" in '97 from the Telco industry (I still do consulting work), I finally broadened my part time guitar work to full time. I really love the work, though it would be hard pressed to fully pay my bills!

Been in the field 9 years, been at the Group Home for three. The Group Home's target population is adolescent males w/ diagnosed Mental illness. As you can imagine, there's never a dull moment!

I made a decision years back that if I couldn't do music full-time, I wanted to do something that was equally fulfilling spiritually/emotionally/socially... it's worked out well for me, though the stress level is higher than I'd like at times!

I was laid off way back in September, after 14 years of on the job. I worked for ONeal Steel, first as a painter, then welder, then cnc saw operator. I did paint and body work before that. Thought I would have a job within a month, has'nt happened. I am living on severance pay, for a few more weeks anyway. I hope to find a new career, and may go back to school. Yep lost my g/f, job and turned 40 all in the same month, good thing I'm the happy go lucky type. I really wanted to quit my job anyway so I'm not complaining. Thought about opening a little music store, but am a little scared of the business end.

Full time guitar and related fretted instrument repair. I've always tinkered with guitars since I first started playing, mine and for friends. After working in construction and grocery, I got a BA in Music and spent some time gigging, repairs were something to do in the day and between gigs. Somehow it became the full time gig after working for other folks, going to Roberto-Venn, a short stint at PRS. I recently became Fender gold level warranty authorized, which was a nice surprise.
I've been very fortunate to have an understanding and supporting wife who encouraged me to follow my heart. We all stand on the shoulders of others and to them owe thanks.
I miss gigging, but we are remodeling our home and have a wonderful 2 yr old daughter, so gigging can wait. Life is a balance of priorities. I am really glad I took the plunge and got into what I love doing and out of what I merely liked or could tolerate.

For those folks in between jobs, hang in there and best wishes.

I code automation using Java or VB for testing IBM/Rational software..and I do it really lousy..I am so lousy at it...ugggghhh but I try hard. I started late in life working that is, a regular job. I did music full time most of my life up until about 6 years ago when I decided I was sick of being one gig away from a street person and hated being the weird uncle who plays in a band and never has any money. I cant even say I had a drug or alchohol problem as I couldnt even afford one. All I had was a tele, a twin, some gig clothes, a bunch of records, a toaster oven , a can of corn, a can of string beans, half a box of macaroni, six cigarettes, $4.18 and that was it.I was living in an abandoned house that the realtor said I could live in so vandals wouldnt burn it down, not a bad deal , just a real spooky and crummy old house...there I was 32 or 33 years old and I had nothing at all, so I went back to school (some how I got a student loan) and cleaned up my act. Changed the way I was living, got down on my knees and prayed to God, well really more like begged the Lord.Shortly after it just kind of all started happening, school, money, shelter, etc...he provided for me what I needed . After finishing school little by little I got a job, a new car, a wife, a house , 2 dogs and worked on my playing and writing...now I have 3 jobs,,,,,the weekend trio gigs, composing for the TV/Movie Film gig and every day at IBM. All through the grace of God....I asked him one time and he provided the rest...he figured I would improvise his plans for me too much so, I gave up and he took over....I dont why, I was just a selfish guitar bum who deserved nothing,,,but the big guy blessed me.

Thats like a CPA in USA terms. I run a small tax and accounts practice in North London, UK, with a wide range of clients including quite a few musicians. They come over, we discuss accounts and tax and other boring stuff, then usually they say, "By the way Rick, I'm thinking of changing the pickups in my axe, what do you think of......." or somesuch. I'd have loved to have been a professional musician, but, you know, you got to earn a living. But I pick up a guitar every single day, and still do as many gigs as I can find.

I manage the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, off of Santa Barbara, California. The Sanctuary encompasses the waters within a six mile radius of San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara Islands. This area is known as the "Galapagos of the West Coast" for its incredible diversity and abundance of species, particularly marine mammals, kelp forests, seabirds, and rockfish.

For those that don't know, a marine sanctuary is kind of like a national park, but it's in the ocean. There are 13 national marine sanctuaries around the U.S.

It's my dream job- I am paid to protect this incredible jewel for all citizens of the U.S., and part of this includes running around in a 62' custom-built aluminum catamaran (cruises at over 25 knots), SCUBA diving, flying in our Sanctuary aircraft, working with school kids and the public, etc. The hardest part is managing the ever-tightening budget and keeping all my employees healthy and happy.

If you have any kids that want to grow up and be a marine biologist, have them check out our website and contact our education department. We have lots of free posters, literature, curriculum information, etc., and one of our key missions is education and outreach.

Check out our website-- www.cinms.noaa.gov

...musician, guitar restorer, gear geak.

I've done a lot of illustration for the Grateful Dead-- T-shirts, CD covers (Stolen Roses and Mother McCrees Uptown Jug Champoins) the "Comix Page" that appears in each issue of Grateful Dead Almanac (see some of them at http://www.dead.net . Click on the Almanac section. My comics are usually on page 3); Hot Tuna (CD cover for "And Furthermore...", tour T-shirts (the fish with the guitar? That's mine.), (Oh, yeah-- finally got to meet Jorma last year. What a treat. Nice guy); Carlos Santana (I interviewed him 5 times and wrote and illustrated his officially-sanctioned biography in graphic novel style); Fat Guys blues band from Chicago (great band).

I've done a lot of book and roleplaying game illustration, and even more comic book work. I've drawn Hawkman, Justice League of America, Jonah Hex, Tonto and the Lone Ranger, Scout, Grimjack, Star Wars ( I was head writer on the SW comic for two years), Tarzan, Green Lantern, Conan the Barbarian... the list goes on.

I teach illustration at Pennsylvania School of Art and Design in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I have a small recording studio and produce and engineer CDs for local acts. I've done a bit of local TV soundtrack work. I currently play lead and slide guitar for the Terry Strongheart Band (Philly guys: we'll be playing at Temple U's Ambler campus over memorial Day weekend at this year's annual Native American Cultural Festival that Temple sponsors. Fun event. If you're near the area write me for details).

I work at a central public library reference desk answering questions all day. I am the resident "expert" on music, movies and audio-visual media-type stuff. (A 30-year city library employee.)

I play in a classic rock band on the weekends.

Plus a club officer in our local Harley-Davidson motorcycle club.

I've fixed airplanes for almost 26 years now.Boy does that hurt admitting that. But we are probably a dying breed. Can't wait to, and hope I can retire in about 7 years and spend a whole lot of time to my real love. Designing, building and repairing guitars. My first build was a tele, still my favorite. Leo Fender was a working mans genious.

I drink so much beer that I make a pretty good living off selling the bottles. Oh, and when I wake up on someone's couch, I always look under the cushons.

...nothing beats waking up on the couch with a bent crooked neck, wearing your clothes, dying of thirst, stinking like a bar. wondering what happened and who has pics of it.

I woke up at dawn on a couch once and it was at the curb being thrown away! There were school kids going by on the way to the bustop...what a lovely sight that must have been.

Programmer. The young turks fresh out of university like to call themselves "Software Engineers". I've been doing it for 15 years, and from what I can see "software engineer" means "don't have a clue". I'm a Programmer. I make things. They work. 8)

I'm software engineer then. Majored in international economics... no wonder my programs never work.

Wow! What a varied group of occupations.

I'm a teacher. After 16 years working for music related magazines in NYC I decided to become an elementary school teacher so I would have a schedule similar to my son's. I worked as a second grade teacher for a couple of years. Everyone who saw my resume said "Hey! With your background why aren't you teaching music?" So I got my certification in music and now I'm looking for a job in that field. So if I get a job in that area, I'll be turning kids on to music for a living. If I don't I'll spend a year writing music, practicing saxes, brass, percussion, and strings...and oh yeah, the Tele. Either way, it's a tough life. Ha!

I'm in business with my dad - we make machine tooling for oil/aircraft/defense. I do design, sell, help with manufacturing, and do just about anything technical that no one else wants to do.
I abuse the machines to do really cool stuff like fabricate telecaster bodies and jack cups.
I moonlite with my previous career as an applications programmer for control of semiconductor fab tools and just about anything else that comes along. Like the other programmer here, i'm not a college grad of "computer science"...i just write stuff that works well and gets used.

I play tele, steel, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and button accordion in a country band in Vegas!
I play tele in a blues band
I play banjo & dobro in a bluegrass band
I spent about ten years in So. Cal. and the past 17 in Las Vegas and a few years along the way just doing road gigs.
Every now and then I spend some time riding horses for a few bucks(no pun).
I've always wanted to be a Chef, I love cooking for people. I might try that some day.

I can tell from your posts that you've walked the walk. I've been doing it for only just over a year now. I play tele, mando and occasional electric bass in a country band. I play acoustic guitar, 12-string and mandolin in an acoustic duo. I play solo 6-, 7- and 12-string guitars. I play a lot of sideman-for-hire gigs. I don't have near the resume you do, nor do I have near the knowledge of the history. And I probably don't cook near as well as you. But I'm in it neck deep -- full-time professional musician.
