yeah so this used to be on the welcome wagon forum, but i figured id get more help if it twas here....

The other day found this guitar hiding under my bed and i decided to bring it along as a spare for a church deal that was gonna last a weekend. well as luck has it, during the intro to our first song a string popped on my main guitar. so i ended up actually having to use this one for the rest of the set. i couldnt get a hold of another string because it was the ONLY string that we didnt have. we were out in the middle of nowhere so we could not go get one either. i had to use it the rest of the weekend and i kinda bonded with its terrible feedback and other problems. it was just enough to get by on....just enough. it sounds bearable at best and has some sort of black substance on the neck...... (i have no idea what). i was thinking about making it my summer project since it has some sentimental value and whatnot. id like to make it a very usable guitar, or even a decent backup at best and i have some ideas

1. sand the neck and re-do it with an amber stain to kinda make it look older.
2. refinish the neck with a satin finish (will this make it smoother?)
3. replace pick ups (suggestions? cheaper? 100-200 for a set)
4. new pots and caps and basically a whole rewire (decent dealers?)
5. new bridge 3 brass saddles, i like the ones with the edges that come up. mine doesnt have that. im not sure exactly what its called....maybe a bigsby and the three saddle down the road if possible. that would be sweet
6. bone nut
7. shield the whole deal
8. and i didn't know if it would be possible considering its already kinda beat up to maybe do some sanding on the body and give it kinda that road-worn deal that fender has been doing on some of its guitars. (any suggestions on how?)

is it worth it? i play just about every sunday at my church and i have a bunch of other side projects i play for. i figured since the guitar was free (complements to my bed) i could make a sweet guitar for a sweet price. never done anything like this before. kinda doing it for the experience i guess. i know its a lot of questions, but ANY help would be appreciated
