triviani April 27th, 2011, 10:26 PM So,.. I have this new (MIJ) Squier, my first tele, and definitively don't like that neck PU, it's as dark as it can get, and has no clarity whatsoever.
I don't have funds now for a new pickup, but I have a couple of Jaguar neck ones around that are unused. An stock CIJ one and a SD sjag1.
Would it be crazy? Or anything would be better than an unusable neck PU?
Did anyone try another guitars pickup on a tele?
Edit, forgot to say that Squier has all the area under the pickguard empty so no routing is needed, just a new pickguard that I need anyway.

Ein?
General Lee April 27th, 2011, 11:04 PM Actually, if you remove the pickup cover you might get a bit more bite and top end (with perhaps just a touch more noise). Just be careful not to break the tiny lead wire when you put the pickup back in the cavity. Squier pickups are not known for their quality but you might just coax enough out of them to hold you over for a while. The jag WILL work but I think you'll find the balance between front and rear pickups somewhat inappropriate sounding. Jag pickups are not renowned for their subtlety. Hence the comment about the evil dead...
triviani April 27th, 2011, 11:47 PM Thanks!
Maybe I'll just save a bit for a proper tele PU..

This sounds like all the better reason for doing it....

People do it all the time. A humbucker at the neck is pretty common, so common that a Tele with a neck HB has its own name: "Fat Telecaster". Mini-humbuckers, P-90s, Stratocaster, and "Charlie Christian" pickups also have been used at the neck position.
It's your guitar, put whatever you want there.

Yeah, that's the best way to put it. You can try it to see how you like it, and if you don't you don't have to buy a different pickguard.
One thing, though. Before you change the pickup, have you tried adjusting its height? That can make a huge difference in tone.

You're right, now that I think about it! Perhaps I should try this myself...Zombies beware!
triviani April 28th, 2011, 09:57 PM yap, thanks all

That's the plan I'll eventually get a CC for the neck but my paypal acc is so 0 right now, so I'll try the jaguar ones I have around until then.
hwestman April 30th, 2011, 09:59 AM I think it would be pretty similar to putting a strat pickup in... not necessarily super bright but certainly brighter that a tele pickup.
I won't fit in a standard telecaster neck pickup cavity though...

Just because I wouldn't is no reason to tell you not to.
You have the pickup, vinyl pickguards are fairly cheap and easy to come by, If you have to shave a little wood off it's not like you're putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa, or wrecking a hundred thousand dollar B'Caster.....
Go for it. If it doesn't do what you want you're no worse off. Any time spent with a soldering iron is experience that may prove valuable down the road.
