yangounet April 21st, 2011, 05:34 AM hi all
I own 3 teles: 52RI copper 97, highway one (lollar pups), Cabronitised MIM standard.
I play all kind of musics, from 70's rocks to reggae
I'm thinking of a fourth guitar, rather different. It should have a big sound, humbuckers probably....
First thought of Gibson but: 335 is too big, lespaul is too heavy,
My luthier told me about Parker, but too ugly...
I'm thinking of SG.... something else?
AJBaker April 21st, 2011, 05:48 AM LP or SG Junior or Specials are nice.
RomanS April 21st, 2011, 05:54 AM SG - almost as comfy as a Tele, if you use a wide strap to counter the head-dipping tendencies...
MikeAcoustic April 21st, 2011, 05:55 AM Well, I'm GASing over one of these.

You're not alone, my friend...
Actually, I'd slap a Bigsby or Maestro Vibrola on there...

yangounet April 21st, 2011, 09:16 AM Lp special (tribute to B Marley) and SG (txs F Zappa) are very tempting...

also, a Les Paul Studio is chambered (as are some other current models) so they are not so heavy. i have one and love it:

yep. I thought about prs too. In France, we have Godin who makes very nice guitars. But... Gibson is a bit of Legend isnn't it?
Sg faded series are so cheap. Very tempting. Does someone owns or tried one and can give me some infos about neck. (difficult to find a shop around for try...)

It's an EVH Wolfgang Special. I own one and absolutely love it.

Omiewise65 April 21st, 2011, 04:03 PM Les Paul studio vintage mahogany . Love it .

Hiker April 21st, 2011, 04:37 PM Wait a bit longer, buying a guitar when you're half-cocked may cause you impulse buy-the wrong axe!
Some of the photos in this thread have incredible looking guitars in them!
Dan German April 21st, 2011, 05:08 PM In France, we have Godin who makes very nice guitars.
Well, Godins are made in a place that used to be New France, but it hasn't been that since the 1760s.
AngryHatter April 21st, 2011, 06:18 PM yep. I thought about prs too. In France, we have Godin who makes very nice guitars. But... Gibson is a bit of Legend isnn't it?

Very nice guitars that you never wipe down!
Fast neck, which is very flat, medium frets that are relatively hard.
Easy access all the way up the neck.
The stock 490s are to use a very overworked word - muddy.
frpax April 21st, 2011, 07:01 PM As someone pointed out in a different thread, and I agree (for the most part), and I will paraphrase,
Every guitarist should have at least 4 guitars in their arsenal:
Tele
Strat
Les Paul
ES 335
Not necessarily those exact guitars, but they should have something that does what they do.
LOSTVENTURE April 21st, 2011, 08:12 PM Check out the Hallmark site. Particularly the 60 Custom model. They feature single coil pick-ups that put most humbuckers to shame.

Coach305 April 21st, 2011, 09:32 PM If you'd consider something a little off the beaten path, you might want to give the Hanson Gatto (http://www.hansonguitars.com/gatto.htm) a look...
SU2sQwScq3o&hl
Full disclosure: Last summer I was gasing for some P-90 fun, and was about to buy an SG Classic when I came across Hanson's Cigno (http://www.hansonguitars.com/cigno.htm) model (which is basically the Gatto but with a trio of P-90s) in a local shop. I've been VERY happy with it. Well made, sounds great, looks fabulous, very reasonably priced, everybody and his cousin doesn't have one...
benderb9 April 21st, 2011, 10:14 PM wow Fosco...it's...Brothers and sisters I give YOU...THE MC5...brother Wayne Kramer and his Epi Wilshire more than a little inebriated I 'might' add...that was LATE in their run...he played Strats and an SG earlier...I have a Wilshire and with new pups it's a GREAT player value and different as well. Light, great upper fret access and excellently balances on the shoulder.
beep.click April 21st, 2011, 10:15 PM Gibson ES-339 (like a 335, but smaller body)
Reverend
Hofner CT Club (cheap!)
yangounet April 22nd, 2011, 02:29 AM thought about 339. diificult to find used, expensive, but I'm thinking about it.
vintageNut April 22nd, 2011, 02:48 AM I have never been a fan of anything gibson but i played one of these the other day and it is now officially on my wish list. Its has nice cleans that are almost fender-ish on the bridge pickup, pretty good jazz sounds and when you overdrive it, the tone is more vintage and smooth rather than sharp and aggressive. I think this will fill my gap between tele and strat nicely. Might be worth checking out for you also.
Omiewise65 April 22nd, 2011, 03:26 AM http://www.brianmayguitars.co.uk/bm-special.html
Something special ?
fuzzworks April 22nd, 2011, 03:43 AM IMO if you want a big sound, you need some hollowbody in the equation--just about any wood/pickup combination is going to sound bigger if you go with (semi)hollowbody instead of solid. Plus controlled feedback is quite a hoot if you are into that sort of thing. What's your budget?

+1. You deserve to at least treat yourself to a test drive of a Gretsch 5120 (or 6120 if your budget allows).
It would be a great addition to a stable of Teles.
yangounet April 22nd, 2011, 05:46 AM one of my teles got 2 tvjones pups (kind of cabronitised MIM) Love it. Good sound. I was looking more for a PAF sound. I'll go to a big shop soon and try some stuff, including gretsch and EVH. Unfortunately, they dont sell gibsons...
Mojohand40 April 22nd, 2011, 09:23 AM hi all....snip
.... lespaul is too heavy,
.....
for what? Backpacking?
Seriously, I see this "too heavy" argument a lot on this forum and I just don't get it. A wide strap and you should be good to go. What's heavier then a LP? Try a Ricky Bass or a banjo or a brass body resonator, etc....all heavier, yet I've seen folks play 'em for hours, and they weren't super human nor were they immediately slapping ben gay and a heating pad on their shoulder afterward.
Telarkaster April 22nd, 2011, 11:27 AM also, a Les Paul Studio is chambered (as are some other current models) so they are not so heavy. i have one and love it:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y170/hekawi/SANY0086.jpg
This is my vote. Nice axe if you find one that's not too heavy.
yangounet April 22nd, 2011, 11:46 AM If I go for a LP, it will probably be a special (love this p90 sound and this marley look). But this LP just above is just beautiful!!!!
SteveGangi April 22nd, 2011, 01:09 PM As someone pointed out in a different thread, and I agree (for the most part), and I will paraphrase,

I would say for the fourth choice -
either a semihollow or a full hollow, and suggest a ES335 (semi) or ES175 (full). For me personally, if I were buying, I'd lean toward the 175 full hollow.
If you want to go Gretsch, I can vouch for the 6122 Country Gentleman, it's excellent.
Two Steps April 22nd, 2011, 02:46 PM I have the LP Studio as well and I can say that it is lighter than my '62 Hot Rod Stratocaster - being that it is chambered.
I'd also recommend an Epi Casino; even though it Is the same size as a 335.
yangounet April 22nd, 2011, 03:11 PM I definitely love lespauls. I have an opportunity of a lespaul swamp ash... here
http://www.zikinf.com/annonces/dispannonce.php?annonce=647136
or a 'simple' special
here http://www.thomann.de/fr/gibson_les_paul_special_faded_p90_wc.htm
hmmm, very tempting...
MikeAcoustic April 22nd, 2011, 07:21 PM If you can get past the..you know, then this I reckon would be an awesome Gibby.
