JerryPro January 6th, 2005, 01:01 PM I have a Route 66 mainly for the compressor. The OD side I don't really use because even turned all the way down it desn't get mellow enough. I hardly ever use compressor either for that matter.
I do have the occassional need for comp but don't like this great big box on my board for occassional use only.
I would like to replace the Route 66 with my Tubescreamer and some sort of compressor. What is a good, inexpensive, comp?
Ruled out: Boss, Digitech
I have an old pink Fender compressor that's been put away for a long time. Hmmm?

Wonder why you ruled out the Boss compressor. I think the CS-3 is a pretty decent compressor. It's got a permanent spot in my pedal board.
What particular sound are you looking for?
Cheers,
Shawn
nasonm January 6th, 2005, 01:51 PM I think if you're looking for an inexpensive comp, you should check out the Boss offerings.
I have a Boss CS-2 that has treated me well.
lenny January 6th, 2005, 02:07 PM mxr dyna comp is a good basic one that i like. i use it with lots of gain and light compression, and i like how it sounds.
Kelsey January 6th, 2005, 04:30 PM The HBE Comp Retro is supposed to be very nice at a price between the Rt. 66 and a Keeley, but there are lots of choices out there now, including models based on the Orange Squeezer as well as the Dynacomp/Ross family.

moonshiner January 6th, 2005, 05:29 PM Rocktron Big Crush... less than 50 bucks.. Nice comp IMO
jonny_frethead January 6th, 2005, 05:56 PM I am pretty cheap but I forked out the cash for a Keeley comp and I couldn't be happier. I use it almost all the time with a variety to guitars and pedals for all sort of clean and distorted sounds. There are so many good settings in it from a clean boost to full on country squash...I have yet to find a bad sound out of it.

Shawn,
Yeah, but you make any pedal sound good. No, I like the R66 comp. The difference in it and the Boss, I thought the Boss colored it a bit for my liking. I my try it out again....................................
That Keeley pedal sounds real good I know but no more than I use one it's alot of cash.
I have been a little curious about the Dyna Comp?
JohnK24 January 6th, 2005, 09:56 PM The Route 66 compressor is based on the MXR Dyna Comp circuit. But, the two Dyna Comps I had sounded much better than the RT. 66 comp. which I found thin and sterile sounding.
Another idea is the Marshall ED 1 compressor (find them on ebay, around $40) or the Guyatone ST2 (again in the $40 to 50 range). You'll have to bid against me though, I'm on the search for one of those pedals.

armybass January 6th, 2005, 10:49 PM Jerry, i was a Dyna Comp freak for a long time and would not even consider a boss comp pedal. But I have found the boss to be a lot less noisy IMHO and with Shawn's settings.... I have been really happy with my little CS3.
Just my .02
