Highway one bridge question

I recently acquired an early version of a highway one strat { the one with the smaller headstock} and the string spacing on the bridge is a little wide. it makes the first and sixth string really close to the edge on the higher frets. does fender use the same spacing on all the 6 hole mounted bridges? or is there a replacement i can put on it to pull the strings a little closer together?

I'd suggest looking at the Callaham website. (Even if you don't buy anything, he has lots of info.)

He has info on specific Fender model/year Strat tremolos that could answer your question. If I'm not mistaken, the pre-2006 Hiway 1's are different than the recent Hiway 1's.

In general, vintage Strat mounting spacing and string spacing was 2 7/32".
MOST MIM's (but not all) have "modern" 2 1/16" mounting spacing and string spacing.

I just purchased and am waiting on the Callaham tremolo for a new USACG Strat build that has vintage mounting spacing but the modern string spacing. AFAIK, I don't believe that anyone else does this. His products are pricey, but very well made and worth it (to me).

I'm about to mount a right handed tremolo in a lefty guitar...with the bar on top.
Gotta remove some wood to make it fit.

According to Bill, 2005 and prior Highway 1's apparently have vintage 2 7/32" for both mounting and bridge spacing and the 2006 and later Highway 1's have 2 7/32" mounting spacing with (narrow) 2 1/16" string spacing. (So Fender DOES make this bridge that I needed, but not the same steel that Bill uses.)

You can determine the year of your Highway 1 by the serial number, or there should be a date on the heel of the neck.

Or you could just measure the distance between the center of the outside two mounting screws for the mounting spacing and measure the distance between E strings at the bridge for the string spacing.

according to my serial number it is a 2004-2005 model and the date on the neck heel is 2004.
so i should have the 2 7/32 mounting hole spacing and the 2 7/32 string spacing.

so with the information provided, i need a 6-pivot bridge with 2 1/16 string spacing and 2 7/32 mounting spacing.

also according to your previous post and the information on the callaham website. the newer highway one series strats have this mounting spacing and string spacing.

by any chance did i interpret this wrong? :roll: i just want to be sure before i place an order with callaham, their parts aren't cheap lol . i may buy calipers first just to be safe :wink:

The newer HWY Ones have the narrower string spacing but the same screw spacing. You can get them parted out off of EBay.

I would measure the mounting spacing to be sure that you order exactly what you need. Those little metal 6" pocket rulers that are graduated in 32nds and 64ths work really well.

It sounds like you need the 2 7/32" mounting spacing, but I would measure to make absolutely sure. You already know that you want the 2 1/16" string spacing.
