asatclassic82 March 16th, 2011, 06:55 PM i have been using a line 6xt live and really like it, but i'm putting together a pedalboard for the first time and would like some tips on what order to put them in. i will be using a volume pedal, tuner, compressor, delay, phaser, overdrive, and additional overdrive. i was just wanting some tips on how some of you guys would lay them out. my band covers everything from merle haggard to SRV so i've tryed tried to get a good variety of effect. thanks
DblStop March 16th, 2011, 09:46 PM I would go tuner-comp-od's-volume pedal-phaser-then delay see if that works for you :)
PineBomb March 16th, 2011, 10:10 PM No bright line rules with this. There's no substitute for your own trial and error. But the advice above is generally good. Some players prefer the phaser before the OD, which is my experience of late. I don't have much experience with volume pedals, but I hear they can come earlier or later in the change depending on taste. If you're stacking overdrives, order between the two will matter.
Suicideking March 16th, 2011, 11:20 PM Do what was already posted or do tuner, compression, overdrive, overdrive, phaser, delay, then volume pedal.
try your volume pedal in those two different spots cause it works in both places. I find that putting in last its more of an overall volume control. In the end try it all cause it is what you like there is no wrong place..
Nub March 17th, 2011, 02:24 AM If you want your sound to decay naturally when you cut your volume, run your volume pedal before your delay. Phaser before or after dirt, depending on where you think it sounds best. Run the tuner either first in line, or off of the volume pedal's tuner "out" if it's got one.
Comp > Phaser > OD > OD > Volume Pedal > Delay
Jethro March 17th, 2011, 11:44 AM Hey guys....great info.
If I can tie into this thread....wondering where a wah might fit into that mix??? I'm thinking last even after the delay???
Nub March 17th, 2011, 12:57 PM Usually Wah first, unless you run a fuzz pedal that likes to be first... then run the wah second.

Nub is right on here he speaks the truth..

This is a good order, but most folks put the volume pedal right after the tuner. That way, you can lower the gain on your OD by rolling the volume pedal back a bit.

That's a good point. Putting the volume pedal before OD/Dist will lower the gain as the volume is backed off, just like rolling down the volume knob on your guitar. Putting the volume pedal after OD/Dist will lower the volume while leaving the gain the same (not including gain from the amp). This can be handy if you stack dirt/boosts, as you can keep volume from jumping too high as you increase the gain. Both ways have their merits & work equally well, it just depends on which way works best for you.
bigbandtele March 17th, 2011, 04:52 PM I like volume pedal after dirt. That way I can have a very distorted sound at lower volumes. I roll back on the guitar to clean up.
