'76 Les Paul Deluxe: tone capacitor issue?

Hi all,
Rolling back tone control (either pickup) of my LP renders no conceivable difference in tone, at any volume or level of gain. The only audible difference occurs at about 2.5 to 3, where it drops quite abruptly.

It has always done this in the 12 years that I've owned it.

Has anybody else experienced this with an older guitar, particularly a Les Paul?

The tone caps are ceramic disks, .02 rating I believe. The wiring is bone stock, no sign of tampering on the solders. It is wired in the modern config: tone cap connected to the pickup.

Thanks for any insight.
(I know, I know, I should go to a Les Paul forum, but come on, I like you guys:wink:!)

It probably isn't a problem with the cap or wiring. It's most likely that the guitar has a linear taper tone pot. I have a '78 Pro Deluxe and the stock pots in it were 300k linear taper for both vol and tone.

I hate linear tone pots. Much prefer audio taper.

If it were mine, I'd replace the pots with 500K audio taper pots and I'd upgrade the tone caps. (RS Guitarworks has kits) I recently rewired a friend's LP and just replaced the volume pots. The tone pots are still kind of hinkey.
