It's a basic feature in vbulletin that is turned off. When you hover over a thread, it gives you a preview of the first 150 words.
It makes browsing the forums much easier.

Because due to our size it slows the server too much.

Length of Thread Preview Text is not server intensive. It actually decreases the strain on the server because users don't have to click on every thread to see what the contents are.
It was suggested to me by the developers at vbulletin.com for my site (as large as this) to decrease strain.
It is worth taking a look at.
This is a fantastic place, but honestly this have been my only pet peeve here.
I noticed you have it enabled on your other sites.
It's worth a try to compare sever load with it on and off. I am betting it decreases with it off.

The TDPRI is 25 times busier than your website. So, we have to manage things differently.

I quietly wondered why that feature was not enabled here at the TDPRI when it was active on its sister site, Strat-talk.
