Tonemonkey January 25th, 2011, 10:49 AM In a few months I'm off, somewhere with less musicians than here!
So its bye bye Band, and Family  for 6 months.
To make it tolerable I'm gonna pack up a Tele, 'coustic, small amp and a couple of ODs (in my old kitbag) and follow my heart filling my spare time with some Blues/Jazz Parlour music, think corner of the bar/cafe, think:
JB Lenoir
JW Warren
Chris Thomas King
Maybe some Dylan (Don't worry, I have a captive audience!)
Sean Costello
etc
So I want a beat, but don't want to stomp my way through every song - any "tap tempo bass/drum machine" pedal options?
I also want to be able to tape and record the groove, then tap and play it back, so that I can lay down some licks over the top - then tap out again, bringing it in to thicken my sound whenever. Don't need much other capability in the pedal.
Any budget low to high considered - nice an simple preferred.
Sorry if the answers are obvious, my pedal experience is limited to ODs.
All advice welcome, and any experiences in this genre/act/gig style would be interesting......eg any other essential kit (chickenwire etc)?
Thanks in anticipation of some help.
Edenfield99 January 25th, 2011, 10:58 AM A Boss Looper pedal will do this. It has built in drum tracks (not great and not editable but they'll do at a push). Tempo is selectable with the footswitch. Then you can loop your self playing over the top. I have the Boss RC-2, it has it's limitations but sounds like it'll be OK for what you're trying to do.
Breezecookie January 25th, 2011, 11:02 AM I do sets with a JamMan looper. I had the RC-2 up to this point, but it crapped out on me and the JamMan is a little better. Beats are better on the RC-2, though (I don't ever use them- I just lay down a rhythm loop, sometimes lay down another "percussion" loop just strumming with muted strings, then play leads over the top). If you want the beats and the versatility of both, you might try the Boss RC-20.
cactusrob January 25th, 2011, 11:05 AM There are a few videos on youtube with a young female artist who uses the looper pedals very, very effectively doing the "one woman show" kind of thing, but I can't remember her name. She plays violin, guitar, drum(s), etc...all with the looper pedals and creates tracks for herself to sing to right on stage.
Can anyone else remember who I am talking about? She is fairly popular but I am terrible with names so I don't recall.
Anyway, if you can find the name and check out the videos, you might get some ideas from her.

aunchaki January 25th, 2011, 01:59 PM Nope, not her but thanks...
She might not be who you're thinking of, but she does great one-woman-show stuff with a looper pedal. I saw her live on Good Morning America or something when her big album hit. She played the song from it using a looper; it sounded great and was interesting to watch.

Tonemonkey January 25th, 2011, 04:57 PM Yeh, thats the sort of thing I was looking for...............
....not sure I have the multi tasking skills required.
Alcohen January 25th, 2011, 05:04 PM I saw Jon Brion do this last year. Just came out on stage by himself, "Hi, I'm Jon Brion," all unassuming-like. Proceeded to sit behind the drums, laid down some drum tracks, then did the same with guitar, bass, keyboard. Thing is, he took requests! So he proceeded to improvise entire arrangements based on what the audience called out. I guess mere music production isn't challenging enough for him anymore. I did read this comment from Sean Lennon, after Brion had worked on his album, saying "It’s like having a weird alien prodigy in your room."

Forgiven. Here's my favourite use of a looper:

Tonemonkey January 26th, 2011, 01:53 PM Ok, so I just ordered an RC-2 after seeing a few online demos.
Now I need a portable amp.....thinking of an AC4tv (mini?)....anyone played an acoustic through one?

Airguitar January 28th, 2011, 11:46 PM My Digitech GNX4 does a good job all in one unit. I hear the RP's are good too..
