Stuff that took you a long time to appreciate

The albums you go back to thread kinda made me think of this...For me, it's Jeff Buckley...I love it now, but back in college when I first heard him, the "fluttery" vocals just rubbed me the wrong way. Didn't give it a chance for 10+ years--boy did I miss out.

Mind you, at the time my favorite bands were pavement, the velvet underground, and television, so actual singing wasn't something I knew much about appreciating!

I hated and ignored country music until I was 40 years old.

It took me a while to realize how much I really love the American Songbook/crooners stuff. Not that I ever didn't like it, I've just really learned to appreciate it as I've aged. Wait!....I may have just had an epiphany!

Classical music. When I was a teen I didn't want anything that wasn't cool. Now I think Beethoven's late string quartets are cool.

I had to hit my mid '30s to appreciate country, western swing, Telecasters, old school Fender amps, and bourbon.

Bluegrass, old-time folk music, country from the '40s, 50s and early '60s. I'm starting to really like them all, thanks to the OFC (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/epic-threads/229884-ol-fashioned-country.html) thread.

The Dead
I tried to like the Dead about 10 years ago. Maybe I should try again.

Same here with the dead, also steely dan, supertramp and alot of classic rock. After I got in my 30's and could take the time to pay attention, my whole life changed. I have almost picked up Jeff Buckley's grace album about 5 times, but have always decided against it. Maybe it's time.

Well, lets lay it on the line...this is sorta what the Dead are all about. If you can't dig it, they just might not be for you:

I know I'm about to be flogged but:

Jimi Hendrix

I knew he was one of the greats but never checked him out much, and the stuff I heard didn't move me much at the time. As I've been getting back into guitar playing again, (spent the last 15 years as a saxophonist) I have been checking out what a lot of new players I have discovered check out, and well....a lot of them end up at Hendrix.

Steely Dan. For some reason they really rubbed me the wrong way growing up (under 20). But now, I get it!

The Stones

If you had asked me 5 years ago who I thought was the most overrated bands from that era, that's who I would have pointed to.

I still don't love Mick Jagger's vocal approach on alot of their songs, but wow, they wrote some great songs.

Pink Floyd.
I've always been exposed to bluegrass, early blues etc. Even as a kid, though I of course listened to rock a lot in my teens. I remember liking lots of Southern Rock and heavy bands like Black Sabbath, and even a lot of early punk...
BUT for some reason when my friends would mention Pink FLoyd or, in particular when the Wall came out, I would roll my eyes and sneer.
I always thought their music very pretentious.

Flash forward twenty and more years...I give DSOTM a listen...then Animals...then...I'm instantly a fan. Now I LOVE Pink Floyd. I guess I just wasn't ready for it back then.

Bruce Springsteen. Hated him until a month or two ago. Heard a lot of the radio stuff, Born in the USA and dancing in the dark... that stupid Time Life christmas song he did... Sat down and had a couple of beers and listened to Darkess On The Edge Of Town all the way through, loved it.

Stuff I strongly disliked back in my younger days, but now love:
Tom Petty
REM
Martinis (the drink)
Dance music (Still hate disco, but house music is really psychedelic, if done right)
Brussel Sprouts

This happened to me too (well...not the saxophone part). I realized that while I don't like the Experience all that much I LOVE Band of Gypsys.

GREAT!

If you need more pointers lemme know and I'll help you out. At some point you'll have to pick up a copy of 12/6/1980. Just a short acoustic councert the band did at a Bay Area home for special needs children. Hearing the woman from the institution introduce the band and mess up/not know half their names combined with her clear and deep gratitutde always brings a huge smile to my face. Here's a picture from the show:
