Just wondering what my neck pup would sound like if I added a copper baseplate to it. Have one laying around from stewmac for bridge pup. Thought about cutting it to fit the neck pup. Any ideas?

i seriously doubt it will sound good, as a base plate with add output and "smooth" thing out. ymmv, but that has been my findings. try it though, you might find that you like it. be sure though to solder a ground wire to it.

By smooth things out, I assume that means roll off even more of the high frequencies; that is more "muddy"?

Chucko is right on. It'll enhance the mids. It might be cool to try if you have a nickel silver cover on it, but with a plated brass cover it will just make it more middy than it already is.

Thanks guys, I figured as much. I have thought of using a nickle/silver cover to make it a little brighter. Has anybody done that? Also, does the type of metal used for the baseplate effect the sound: that is copper vs brass plated steel?

As long as the core is ferrous, the plating won't matter that much. At least not where you can hear it.
I put nickel silver covers on my pickups. Very clear and almost stratty.

Ive got one on my warmoth tele. Albeit the neck pickup is a strat pup w/ baseplate. It sounds very nice. Not dark IMO very SRV sounding even though im not aiming for that tone.

Be sure to get some wax between that plate and the pup to seal it on,OK
:otherwise~~~~~~~~~~~~ SQUEAL ~~~~~~~~~~~~ she will.

To me base plates is like adding more winds too.. there's a chance it will muddy up a regular neck pickup.... Its best done to a pickup 6k or less. it also stabilizes the magnets and may add some boost to volume?

I'll give it a try just for the hell of it. I've been working on a build that I hope to finish this weekend. Will post the results.

They are all steel. Some copper plated, some galvanized. The steel is the part that matters because of its magnetic properties. The plating has no effect on the sound.
