Big Muff Pi?Kagam October 10th, 2010, 03:51 PM I've had my big muff Pi for about a month now and I really want to get a new sound going, does anyone have a suggestion? Pinball_Wizard October 10th, 2010, 03:54 PM What do you mean? African or European swallow? Describe what you mean by new sound, because the request given could mean a lot of things. morroben October 10th, 2010, 03:55 PM Sorry, but I don't understand your question. Are you looking for suggestions for a different pedal? Or are you searching for settings for the Muff? Kagam October 10th, 2010, 03:59 PM My mistake, I am wondering about setting for the Big Muff Pi.I would like to know what setting anyone would suggest. Oh and it is the Made in New York one.The one that is Currently available. morroben October 10th, 2010, 04:11 PM What settings are you using currently? What kind of sound are you hoping for? With just 3 knobs, and not knowing what your rig is, my suggestion would just be to go with trial and error. Start turning knobs until it sounds good. My normal setting is volume at 12 o'clock...tone about 2 o'clock...sustain around 10 o'clock. But those settings would sound a lot different with a different guitar and/or different amp. Warm Gums October 10th, 2010, 04:17 PM I have a russian one, it's pretty beat and the original knobs are gone, I have some cheezy round ones on there just for grip, I have no real idea what my settings are, I just turn it untill I like what I hear, which happens more often with the pi than most of my other OD devices :-) Kagam October 10th, 2010, 04:37 PM I don't really know how to describe my style of playing. It's bluesy I know that but other wise I don't know.As for my amp,I run my guitar into the Big Muff Pi then into a Morley Bad Horsie Wah Pedal. Then I run that into a Kustom Double barrel 30W.I'm working on getting a better amp at the moment. And I play a 1999-2000 MIM Tele with stock Pickups. Bill October 10th, 2010, 09:56 PM I have an old "triangle knob" BMP from around 1970, so I don't know how it compares to the reissues. But one of the classic sounds is to get a looooooooooong sustaining, warm (rather than piercing) violin-like sound. Basically turn the Sustain knob up a ways and back off the Tone to cut any shrillness. I use the Volume knob to get a slight boost. sushiibob October 10th, 2010, 11:19 PM turn everything up full. pure toneee. hobbes007450 October 11th, 2010, 01:12 AM I put everything around the 1-2 o"clock mark. So basically 666. For that pure devil's tone. orangedrop October 11th, 2010, 09:25 AM You might consider placing the Pi at the end of the effect chain and see how that works. many pedals have slim headroom and driving their input can sound quite ugly. Especially if the devices do not have "true bypass" switching. Then, no matter if you only have the Pi running, you still have an unhappy transistor between you and the amp. Now all that said, some combinations can be used to great effect with the distortion ahead of the other pedal. A wah for instance so long as you don't hit it too hard. Try a few configs. and see what you hear going on. Your ears are great diagnostic equipment here and in answering your original question. Try cranking one parameter at a time to see what it does. Just keep the amp turned down a bit so you don't blow a speaker or hurt your ears. This is always the fun part for me with new gear... Discovering what each parameter/knob/setting/mode does/can do. |
