That Ernest Tubb intro of Rusty Gabbard was great, the way Ernest came back and announced it after Rusty told him what he should have asked. Part of the charm of those old shows. It would never happen today, they'd have to reshoot it until it was perfect.

Here's an old Faron Young song I liked, Unmitigated Gall. Reached no. 7 in 1966, almost forgotten today.

Getting back to Hank Williams, he wrote this one for himself but the story goes that he gave it to Big Bill Lister because by this time Hank's alcohol problems were well known and MGM didn't want any drinking songs from him.

We often focus on the artist who sings the songs and gets the girl at the end of the night, but the writers make it all possible in the first place. Here's a little bio on a great writer, who is also a helluva picker and singer, in his own right.

Wayne Kemp began his career at age 16 playing guitar in a local Tulsa, Okla.,club. In 1965, after a mutual friend introduced him to George Jones, Wayne began playing lead guitar for
George and then for other artists such as Patsy Cline, Red Sovine and Conway Twitty.

In 1967, Wayne battled back from a terrible automobile accident to play guitar again. In1968, after Conway Twitty recorded "The Image Of Me," Wayne signed with Tree Publishingin Nashville. Into the '70s and throughout the '80s, Wayne enjoyed hits such as Twitty's "That's When She Started To Stop Loving You" (Top 5 in 1970), Johnny Cash's "One Piece At A Time" (#1 in 1976), Johnny Paycheck's "I'm The Only Hell (My Mama Ever Raised)" (Top 10 in 1977), George Strait's "The Fireman" (Top 5 in 1985), and Ricky Van Shelton's "I'll Leave This World Loving You" (#1 in 1988). Additionally, his song "Love Bug" has been a Top 10 single twice — once for George Jones in 1965 and again for George Strait in 1994.

Del McCoury and his band do some great old time stuff. Love the way they do 3 and 4 part harmony and everyone breaks off to do leads. Awsome. The traditions of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass boys lives on. IMO there are some great talented bluegrass players out there who may never get to the levels of fame, but they are well known in their areas and home towns, and they keep the style alive by passing on their skills to the younger generation.

Just uploaded by Starday, IMHO one of Eddie Noack better songs although not typical for him. Written by Jessie Barkdull, wife of Wiley Barkdull (of Rusty & Doug fame).

I liked the "piani" solo in that Eddie Noack tune. Sounds like they just rolled it in from the bar down the street from wherever they recorded it.
this thread is about the best jukebox ever compiled, I reckon.

Webb Pierce - Don't Do It Darlin'
_sp4MUX5dtI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sp4MUX5dtI

I learned how to sing listening to Webb Pierce. Singing country is very difficult, as many of these guys and gals are stylists, and they sang a lot of church hymns, giving them hella range. I can't sing as well as Webb, but he taught my how to shape my vocal chords, and what part of my nasal to use. One of the best of the "tough romantics".

Most of the Glenn Barber tunes on YT have been his early rockabilly numbers from the mid 50s. At last we have one of his 60s country records -- one of my all-time favorites. I remember buying it at R&M Record Shop in Houston in 1964. I've always loved the fiddle and steel work on this one.

Some of us old timers will remember what inspired this song title.

According to Rolling Stone, the number one song in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407) is Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone. And according to their article (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407/bob-dylan-like-a-rolling-stone-19691231) on LARS, Dylan was partially inspired by this:

^^^ For those who don't know the story, that's actually a demo. MGM wouldn't put it out because of Hank's already well publicized drinking problems, so Hank gave the demo to Big Bill Lister, who put out the record. In the late 80s (IIRC) Lister found the acetate in a box of old stuff and gave it to Hank Jr.

Country Johnny Mathis was making records (solo and with Jimmy and Johnny) before the "other" Johnny Mathis. This is his only solo chart hit. Great song from 1963, covered by Ray Price, Freddy Fender and others.

One of my two favorite songs from him. Love the song itself but the fiddle and non-pedal steel really do it for me.

Hey, that's Amber Digby!

http://www.amber-digby.com/

She's got a bunch of other good tunes posted on Youtube. Her steel player, Dicky Overbey (http://www.yellowroserecords.com/dicky.html), is a living Texas legend... What an amazing player.

Amber's voice might not have the sheer power of LeAnn Rimes, but who does? Amber gets the job done quite nicely, and besides, her choice of repertoire and pedal steel player more than make up for everything!

Thanks for posting!

I would rather hear this lady sing rather over Lee Ann Rimes any day of the week.
What a voice!!!!

Aybody remember that story of old Hank Williams hanging with Ernest Tub and Roy Acuff? He was on a bill with the guys and he was feeling pretty good at this point, when he offerred the other two the key to his sound, and success.."I just take a little of ol Ernest here and add a little bit of Acuff, and you put em both together and you get me!" The other two were not amused. Hanks would soon dominate the country music charts.

Never heard that story, and it doesn't ring true to me. Tubb's style was very different from Hank's, and Acuff was not a honky tonk singer or writer, hard to see anything but an indirect influence. Also, no disrespect to Roy or Ernest, but Hank was miles ahead of them as a singer.
