She also triggered a semi-famous radio minidrama at the Grand Ole Opry in 1973. A 14-year Opry veteran, Davis was headed to Ryman Auditorium on Dec. 15, 1973, when she saw Nashville police arrest 15 long-haired "Jesus people." Deeply religious herself, Davis told the Ryman crowd and the Opry's national radio audience that the police had acted wrongly and with unnecessary force. Since Vietnam War protests were still a point of national contention, and since the rare whiffs of politics on the Opry stage almost never involved criticizing institutions like the police, Davis caused quite the Nashville scandal. She was suspended after the show and didn't return to the Opry for 18 months. Finally, the Opry quietly admitted it might have overreacted, and she sang about Jesus there for many more years:twisted: Good for you Skeeter ! ~ wiki tgfmike October 31st, 2010, 11:57 AM Just about as OFC as you can get, IMO, and a lot of fun. yHUhekG3ubc StephenX October 31st, 2010, 01:41 PM Yep, Hank wrote the book. bl8Sr1h9a-Y StephenX October 31st, 2010, 07:24 PM Webb Pierce - I'm Tired Do y'all know that Webb has STILL not been inducted into CHoF to my knowledge. RRf4cZlC_G8 Do these sound like the words out of the mouth of a dumb blonde: ""There are people that want the Prozac country," Cook states. "They want things that are light or things that are cliché in sentiment. It's like if they have any weight, it's cliché weight. It's about how patriotic you are; that you love grandma. It doesn't ring true for me; not true enough. I'm bored with it. And I think it sells a lot of people short. It's a shame they can't sell advertising around music that's a little more poignant." "On the other hand, maybe that's what some people want when they get in their car to go to the job they don't want to go to. Maybe they just want to hear something easy; something that doesn't move them one way or the other. Just something to block out whatever they don't want to deal with. And that's not my approach to music. That's not what interests me about music. That's not saying one way's wrong or right, it's just different." ~~~Elizabeth Cook ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An interesting tidbit: That song by Sunny I posted was written by Tim Carrol, who is Elizabeth Cook's husband (small world ain't it) Dave W November 2nd, 2010, 11:14 PM The Carlisles Fsnf3WCDQLQ Fast forward about 40 years to the late 1990s, here's Bill at about age 90. hVDRXHGxiV8 For those that don't know him, he was usually called Jumpin' Bill Carlisle. So I'll just post this ad and I'm hoping someone in Texas (hint hint) goes to this soon- to- be- legendary performance, cause you will be able to say "I was there" to your great grand kids someday. Heart of Texas Recording Artist Amber Digby will be recording a live album and DVD this Saturday night at the Swiss Alp Dance Hall in LaGrange, Texas. Amber's band "Midnight Flyer" will also be featured. Ok, I'm already getting in line for detention @ Principal TGF's office. She is the victim of fame, I mean I think she would have been much more accepted for the star she is, if it wasn't for the fact she was born into Nashville royalty. Sometimes it doesn't help to have a famous name to establish an artist. I can't speak for everyone, but an occasional off-topic (Thompson, who isn't far OT anyway) is completely acceptable from a poster who has established their credentials. Hell, Eli could even post "Louie,Louie" and I wouldn't bat an eye. Ahhhhh Sandy Denny. What a tragic end to a most beautiful songstress Ibob.. When I was unloading old vinyl, her 4 lp box set was one I just couldn't part with. She is so precious. Nice history link Dave, and there is that Jack Clement again. Still can't believe I never heard of him as I rank songwriters very high in the musical food chain. I agree Bucko, Dels version of that is the stuff from which legends are made. "Down on the Corner", now that is cooking TG. I see the resemblance too. And finally that mangy old coot who done stole my gal. First time I ever heard the name Steve Earle was (again) back on the old *Prodigy country forum. Must have been around '93-'94, and out of the blue some lady "walks" in amongst the heathen asking us all to pray for Steve Earle. I was like, What??? I'm supposed to pray for someone I never even heard of? And who is this uninvited guest to the hillbilly club? Well, I never found out who it was, but she obviously was very close to Steve. She went on to describe how he was a mess, worst ever from someone who knows worst. Said he was below 100 pounds, indescribably sick and was not expected to live. Too much booze, blues, women and drugs. Well he pulled through and came back better than ever, sometimes it just takes that umpteenth chance the the Lord is gracious with. Whew, sorry to bore you all. So I'm guessing that our maker had other plans for Mr Earle and even sent him an angel in the form of Allison. I can not listen to "Soft Place" without getting emotional. I know it was a big hit and overplayed, but no matter how many times I hear that "live" version, I am reduced to putty. And they just had a baby this year; Congrats Steve & Allison. I thought I was done, but oh well....... Shelby and Allison are going to be at the Birchmere later this month and I won't miss that show bar hell or high water. They both got legit angst from a life scarring incident that I won't repeat here because it's just overwhelming. This is OT cause it's more a blues, but I didn't think you'd mind bbaGWRBTrXk ibobunot November 6th, 2010, 06:17 AM Jo-El Sonnier + Richard Thompson - Tear Stained Letter MeLfKPg-d1g Patty Loveless - Austin City Limits Can't Stop Myself From Loving You kdKe_KMjcfE Blame It On Your Heart DdLkMTarj2I You Will RpyXsl3BOIE Blue Side of Town t91PzwVkAaM mudshark November 6th, 2010, 07:24 AM t0fXdtVteaI&feature=related pOMP2MvuGeM&feature=related StephenX November 6th, 2010, 08:49 AM Rick, good stuff; loved those cloggers, and thx again for the Sahm stuff; it's amazing! The Bluegrass Champs (http://www.bluegrasschamps.com/) had three to four Stoneman family members over the years, the group basically turned into The Stonemans in the early 60s. Roni had joined by then. But Scotty didn't make the move to Nashville with them. He had severe alcohol problems. He went to California and was briefly in the Kentucky Colonels (the White brothers' band). Died young, supposedly from an overdose of a medicine he was taking for his alcoholism. Great fiddler. I just ordered the Oh Susanna! movie on ebay ... it was less than 5 bucks for two cds new with 7 additional Gene Autry flicks from the '30s  Edit to add: It's worth mentioning a couple of young'uns left the Light Crust Doughboys earlier on and did pretty well for themselves: Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan. Buckocaster51 November 7th, 2010, 11:13 AM Gonna stick my neck out on this one. Written by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart, the same fellows that wrote Tennessee Waltz. There are other versions...most notably by Patsy Cline. HrJSG6WW0cE mudshark November 7th, 2010, 11:33 AM What's not to love about Jo Stafford singing a Pee Wee King Song? Well. My love for female vocalists extends across all styles and epochs (maybe a few I don't appreciate:smile:) I don't think I ever saw a pic of Jo Stafford before. Thank you for clearing up my mental image of her:She will no longer look like Ethel Merman in my mind. And I love Dean Martin (but pls; no Sinatra pls.) StephenX November 8th, 2010, 09:10 AM Sammys all right. I just never have been able to tolerate Sinatra (Frank I mean, not Nancy). Guess it's like some young gen not liking Beatles. Legendary, but he just doesn't do it for me, and I can't fake my tastes.
