John Lee Hooker as done by Tom Jones

I thought Mr. Jones done well here. If I could sound like that at 70, even on the guitar, I will be content.

It's a John Lee Hooker tune recorded back in '59.

Lovely Mr. Jones. Could almost imagine Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys on this tune.

I really enjoyed that.

Seems like there could be the makings of a blues/roots revival with this and John Mellencamp's new 'one mic in the room' cd getting great reviews.

Even the young music critic on NZ tv breakfast programme was raving about both these albums!! And she is one of those young critics who likes to apply the most scathing remarks to so many reviews just to appear interesting!

Awesome cut. No bass player either.

Thanks for posting the others Mark.

Tom Jones is a great talent. A lot of stars back in the day had a TV show like Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Buck Owens and Tom Jones. I just kind of took them for granted. I realize now what huge talents these people were/are.

I don't know Breen, I think Tom sounds a little stiff, a little stilted. This is what I'm reminded of...

Yeah, didn't think so. Ha ha!

I think ol' Tom did it in his own inimitable style.

I can't tell from any of those videos if Tom is still wearing that big ol' rodeo buckle that George Paul gave him years ago. He wore it on stage for years.

Sorry for the diversion, I hadn't thought about that in years until this thread.

Here is a little inside story.

A girl I know worked for Tom Jones.

She was in charge of his wardrobe.

He had a compartment in his pants where he would stuff things to look like he had more downstairs. hahaha one night the compartment came undone and this rubber dong fell out from under his pants. hahaha This was in Vegas. hahahah

He did cancel his dates here in my island because of throat problems. Twice in a week! Maybe it was before that he was at Jools Holland hehe.

Not alot of people have respect for him here recently because of his cancellation, he sang one song on the first date and said sorry can't do and left. His promoters said we will have another make up gig going a week later. He pulled out of that too.

since we are on Tom Jones stories~

But I think he's a great singer at his age. Same for Paul Rodgers.

I think a lot of people classify Tom Jones in the "cheese department" because of the work he did in the 60s and 70s...kind of lightweight pop stuff, even tracks that verged on novelty songs (ever hear "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer?")

Fact of the matter is, and I can appreciate this now, he is an amazing vocalist with a huge range and a huge knowledge of music going back to ancient rural American blues. The guy can sing most anything.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. JMO but Tom's vocal stylings and inflections put a Vegas template around everything he does. I guess he's done it so long that way he can't help himself. But of course the market will be his judge.

Kinda reminds me of the Cyndi Lauper blues album.

I get the wink, but the irony is that song was written by a white boy (like me ha ha)

I generally prefer black blues singers, but ole Tom is around 70 odd years old, and I think like anybody else at that age he must be facing his own mortality in a very real way. I reckon he means what he's singing, and that's all you can ask for.

I'm a big fan of early JLH and I've always thought of Tom Jones as a technically excellent but soulless Vegas showbiz singer, so I was prepared to dislike this version of Burning Hell, but bleep me rigid, I don't.

Oopsie, think I must've deleted a quote tag by mistake. I think y'all can work it out.

According to Elvira Mistress of the Dark, she lost her virginity to him and said he was packing a big iron; but what does a virgin have to compare it with?

I'm a big fan of Michael Franks-great songwriter.

Maybe some head to head comparisons?

As good as Tom is he comes up second in the mojo vocal department. JMMV:wink:
