New drums! Well, okay, very old drums. As some of you may know, I am primarily a drummer, but I post here because I love guitars and because other drummers tend to communicate more in grunts.
Story:
I saw a drum kit listed on the local Craigslist for $75. I looked at the picture and it looked like a vintage Ludwig! In fact I was pretty sure it was. So I emailed. Waited 8 hours, no response. Emailed again. This time the seller said, sorry they're spoken for; someone is picking them up in the morning.
Knowing that a Craigslist item is not truly sold until it is no longer in the seller's possession, I replied "Well just to let you know, they're worth more than $75, and I might be willing to pay more if I can inspect them."
Sure enough, the seller responded, "If you can get here at 9am, you can look at them." Despite not getting that email until 3am, I was there at 9. It was a church! I am of the opinion that the best gear deals come out when churches clean their basements. Anyway I inspected the drums (not exactly what I thought, but more on that below) and was informed that the other potential buyer was on his way with an $80 offer.
I handed the guy $100 and loaded up the drums. On my way out, I passed a youngish musician-looking guy in the parking lot who was about to have a disappointed look on his face.
Okay I know you want pics:

As best as I can tell, the bass drum and high tom are from 1967 and the floor tom are from late 1969. The floor tom is obviously different, which devalues the kit. If this were an intact matching set, they'd be worth $1200 easy. Also, half the lugs and a hoop have been changed on the high tom, and one side of the bass drum claws have been replaced with die-cast claws.
So they're not a collector's item, but they're worth my $100. I play drums in a Beatles cover band, and I was planning on forking out about $1800 for a new set of Ludwig Classic Maple drums next month, so my jones has been sated with a single C-note for now. New heads are on the way and I can't wait to actually play them!
