OreoCaster - First project, looking for pickups

Hello Tele lovers,

After playing around with scaled guitar models (electric ukes built for my kids),
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/S3r5VJTJonI/AAAAAAAAAvg/hMbs2ah02jU/s912/all.jpg

It's time for a real Tele!

Although the materials are more like as in a Les Paul, the shape will be based on a '72 Thinline.

Mahogany/maple semi hollow body with maple top.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/TFKwz6atreI/AAAAAAAABFU/ZuaByEyY3bs/s912/layers.JPG
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/TFKw0R74DfI/AAAAAAAABFc/Iy7HOE0IMfg/s912/thickness.JPG

For a first project, it's quite hard to guess how this guitar is going to sound like, choosing pickups is even harder.

I really wanted the Artec Giovanni GVH-1, risking $50 for a pair of those is OK, but can't find any.

For vintage Jazz/blues warm (not too muddy) sound, could someone recommend a pair of humbuckers (neck/bridge) for less than $100.

thanks for the help

Try Seymour Duncan's website. Go onto the Support tab and click on "Tone Wizard". That should give you a list of what you should use. I recomend the '59 model for jazz and blues, though. These are expensive, though, so either look for them on Ebay or get a cheap pickup, like a Powered by Lace, for one position, and then get the more expensive one. You can always change it out later!

thank you! it's a great tool

the '59 works for me, so i'll get the GFS equivalent PUPs.

some progress:
event after drilling the cavities, the body (30mm) still weighs too much, about 7 pounds...

What are the pickups used in the ukes? Looking to do a similar here too :)

Those electric ukes are cute.

Why are you calling this OreoCaster? Oreos are a kind of biscuit in Canada.

Isn't the pickups in the pink one just a split P-bass pickup?

those ukes were made of recycled junk:
BabyTelly (http://picasaweb.google.com/kapach/BabyTelly#)
Paulie (http://picasaweb.google.com/kapach/Paulie#)
BabyStrat (http://picasaweb.google.com/kapach/BabyStrat#)

hard-drives have powerful neodymium magnets, i used them to build the pickups.
(BabyStrat has an additional piezoelectric element)

The best thing about those ukes, is that they kept my kids away from the guitars stand :)

This is fascinating. I, too, graduated from ukes to guitars, but making my own pups is not something I think I'll ever have the patience for.

I like the Strat-uke best, even if that makes me a heretic here.

Since the top is 15mm (less than 5/8''), i had to remove some wood...
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/TGA9nTjt4xI/AAAAAAAABIY/QypgOqx6N9s/s800/top_inside.jpg

for a first build, making the neck by myself was too risky so i ordered a custom Warmoth neck.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/TG1XIdO1WrI/AAAAAAAABI4/RTT19YyKXnM/s800/father_daughter.JPG
got some parts from Stew-Mac & eBay
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_qxz3IDL1yJw/THwCdgtL9KI/AAAAAAAABKY/J-SA20yvV_4/s720/some_parts.JPG
the Schaller bridge is really a nice piece of hardware, i just love it !

i hope that the wenge veneer would hold the maple top.

Hello Tele-lovers
It's amazing how much info you can dig out of this forum!
Almost any problem I've encountered was already discussed and solved here in many threads.
For example: avoiding/fixing Tear-outs, aligning the neck screws, using decals and many more.
So thank you!

The result is great, I really love the way it sounds and feels, it's more like a Les-Paul as expected, but still got the beautiful telecaster look which I love.

You can find more photos of the build process here: http://picasaweb.google.com/kapach/72ThinlineTelecaster#
See you at the neck project (it's like a drug and I'm hooked)

thank you all,
the painter did a really nice job, he took an ordinary maple and made it show some flames, now it looks like a candy (cherry flavor)

Do you mean, Preeb did the paint job?
:) in this case, it's some else: Mr. Vachterman.
building guitars in highly contagious, there are many amateur/professional builders around here.
i bet that lots of people (worldwide) started making their own tele after watching TDPRI.
