castpolymer July 29th, 2010, 08:17 AM Today I offer up the smoothest mood music to spawn from the 80's, Roxy Music's " Avalon." Just about every guy who was in college in the 80's owes a debt of gratitude to the Roxy's for helping them close the deal at least once or twice. Released in May of 1982, this was Roxy Music's last studio album. My favorite track is " Avalon." The gal who sang on that song has some serious pipes. Man, what a great album.
Tele-Monster July 29th, 2010, 08:37 AM Always kinda liked Roxy, but Brian Ferry has a really annoying voice....IMO. Still a great album. I had two other of their albums growing up and can't remember the names. One had to hot chicks standing in front of some bushes!!! The other had a woman holding a panther infront of a limo. The latter album was when Brian Eno was part of the band. As you can tell not the biggest fan, but there is something that I like about them!

It worked for me, no joke ... I bet it would still work on them cougars!
Oster July 29th, 2010, 11:26 AM I love that album. I bought it when it came out. My local record store (now recently closed of course) had a $1.00 deal for two new releases: Roxy's 'Avalon' and Haircut 100's 'Pelican West'. Thank God I went with Roxy Music!
No resulting hot date action though - I was only 12 - but that album always brings me back to that Summer I bought it and it opened the doors to a lot of good music, including every single other album Roxy Music ever did. In a way it's the perfect '80s album: It sounds like it should coming from that decade but there is nothing dated or embarrassing about it.
I've long sold my original vinyl (it had baggy shrinkwrap - funny the things you remember). My current edition is a mini LP format Japanese CD. That series, if you know them, are among the finest sounding CDs ever made.
jkingma July 29th, 2010, 11:55 AM Absolutely one of the best albums from the 80's period.
The Main Thing is one of my all time favourite songs.

Side note... anyone who likes instrumental guitar tunes should check out Phil Manzanera's LP Primitive Guitars. Its pretty high up on my list of great LP's.

Yup and I didn't even go to college , still worked in the 90's too:wink:
bowman July 29th, 2010, 02:24 PM Great album. A lot of '80s music was crappy, but records like Avalon would come along once in awhile to drag us out of the synth wasteland.
And as for an aid to romance - it still works now.

That is a great album but not at all a typical '80s album. It's more of an excellent psychedelic '60s album that happened to be recorded in 1983.
Avalon on the other hand is so unabashedly of its own time and space it makes 1982 sound like the place to be, which is the side effect of all of the truly greatest music in this reporter's opinion: it celebrates its own era.
Maxwell Street July 29th, 2010, 04:59 PM "What Goes On" The Bride Stripped Bare with Waddy Wachtel  1978
(Lou Reed cover) always liked Bryan's stage persona...too cool and self deprecating at the same time...
"The Main Thing" from Avalon...

Whoops! I misunderstood! I thought you wanted me to post MY '80s flashback album for today!
Post Toastie July 29th, 2010, 06:07 PM I saw Roxy Music at the Santa Monica Civic when "Country Life" came out.One of the best concerts ever.Phil Manzenera comes out and starts playing "Parrie Rose" on a Gibson Reverse Firebird guitar (hear the chords ringing?) and with band following continues while Brian Ferry walks up to the mike stand dressed in a Tux and a cig in one hand and a glass of champaine in the other just in time to to say "Texas" (the first word of the song)and the crowd went totally nuts.I still see this concert in my mind like it was yesterday.I was sitting in the last row and it was perfect.

"To Turn You On" was the musical equivalent of a Hail Mary pass.
