octatonic July 27th, 2010, 02:48 PM Not expecting loads of others here to share my passion for extended range guitars but here goes.
I picked up a Musicman Petrucci 7 string today.
Monster guitar- huge neck and nice sounding acoustic/piezo tones mixed in with the rock tones.
It is purple in real life but photographs green.

I also have a handmade 7 string Thomas Devoe archtop in blueburst. I will add pics soon.
geetarfreek82 January 26th, 2011, 10:26 AM sweet, is that thing the Mystic Dream color? I love EBMM, i've been gassing for a Morse Standard and a Petrucci 7. I play death metal when i don't have a Tele in hand, and i have a couple Ibanez 7's.

Yes. Epi made them for 1 year. Very nice guitars. They had them in honeburst and clear black. I wish they still made them.
BigDaddyLH January 26th, 2011, 11:06 AM I've been gassing for a seven string for a long time. One I like is the seven string version of the Eastman El Rey. It has a fully hollow body, but without f-holes:

She'll be sweet for death metal ^H^H^H^H finger-style chord melodies.

This is my Tom Devoe 7. Unfortunately Tom retired from guitar building. The blue has faded a little. I sure wish I knew a way to revitalize the color, but it sounds and plays great!

For Jazz, I use a low A. On the Epi I use a set of '11s with a 74 for the low A an octave below the 5th string.
I use '12s on the archtop.
BigDaddyLH January 26th, 2011, 11:53 AM Just a pointer here to the Agile T-7 Texan, if anyone is looker for an inexpensive 7-string T-style guitar:

I saw that I while ago. I wouldn't know how to use the low string. If I could use it like a Baritone I would jump on that. Is that how you guys are using it?
rsclosson January 26th, 2011, 12:17 PM I use mine for jazz chord melody or comping w/walking bass.
jazztele January 26th, 2011, 12:27 PM My next guitar, which won't be for a while, will be a seven string archtop. I wish Ibanez would make one again, so I wouldn't have to spend too much dough in case I discover it's NOT for me!

Search fleabay for "7 string archtop guitar" there are several offers for what look like decent lower priced ones available.
A good way to test the waters is to take one of your six strings, put your low E on the 5th string position, get a .74 or .80 guitar string and put it on the 6th string position. (be prepared to do a little nut and possibly bridge filing) You will lose a few chord voicings, but surprisingly few. I did that while awaiting my first 7 string and was ready for it when it finally arrived.
Northerntele January 26th, 2011, 12:38 PM Yep. Its a big ugly one too.

Wait y'all were talking about guitars? nevermind then...
jazztele January 26th, 2011, 12:39 PM yeah, I actually keep a guitar tuned A E D G B E now, still seeing if it's something I really like...
