Question about Peavey Classic 30

I recently picked up a Peavey Classic 30 in a trade. I have read a lot of posts about tube updates and speaker changes, so I swapped out the pre amp tubes for some Tungsol’s I had, and I put in a Celestion Greenback speaker. The amp sounds pretty good, but I haven’t had a chance to turn it up past about two yet. My question is, since the Greenback is rated at 25 watts and the amp is rated at 30 watts, do I risk blowing the speaker if I play it at band volume? Does anyone else have a Greenback in a Classic 30 with no problems?
Thanks for any advice.

No one is running a Greenback in a Peavey Classic 30?
Now you got me worried.

I don't have a 25 watt Greenback in my Classic 30, but if I did, I wouldn't really worry about blowing the speaker. Ride it hard and put it away wet.

I'd be more worried about a mismatch on the ohms than a small mismatch on the power rating.

If you will constantly worry about it every time you crank it up, then you should probably not leave it in there. It will bug you forever.

I suppose if you were really that worried you could change it for an Eminence Private Jack or Legend GB12? They're rated much higher.

If you're running the the clean "channel" into power tube overdrive, you may be easily pushing 40-50 watts. Enjoy the Greenback while it lasts. I'd be looking for something like an Eminence GB12 in 16 ohms (or whatever Eminence is making now that's similar) if you like the sound of the Greenback but want more power handling.

Thanks for the replys. I think I will look into the Eminence Legend GB12. I know it only comes in 8 ohm now, but I have the dummy plug in the ext. speaker jack.
Thanks again.

I'm no amp wiz, but if the greenback is rated at low watts, isn't it going to break up (distort) easier than a high wattage (and more efficient?) speaker? Peavey Classics are great amps, but they REALLY overdrive easily even with the stock higher wattage speaker-- even on the "clean" (ha ha) channel.

C-30 on Houston CL for $200 OBO as of 7/1. Also a NIB King of Tone for 4 bills.

If you are contemplating on getting a speaker for the C30, get a a Weber Blue Dog ceramic. IMO as well as a lot of C30 owners, it is the best speaker for the C30.

Wow! That reminds me, I haven't tried my C-30 with my Webers yet...

That's another project for the weekend.

Just an update on my C30 speaker. I ordered a Weber Blue Dog ceramic, 16 ohm 50w light dope. I installed it yesterday and played through it for about two hours. The first thing I noticed was I had to turn up the treble and mids a bit, seems a little darker than the Greenback. But after that every thing seems good to go to my ears. I'm hoping after the Weber gets broken in, that it will only get better.
Thanks again to everyone for all the suggestions.

I'm interested in hearing how the speaker swap works out too as I am kicking around making some upgrades to my new Classic 30- starting with the tubes. So please do give an update when you swap it out.

First Classic 30 I had, I put a Celestion Vintag 30 in it, which was a really good match. The 2nd one I owned, i put a Cerwin-Vega in it, which was much more like a JBL tone-wise.

Side note, am I the only one who runs a stock C30 with all three toned controls maxed?

No. I do it with pretty much every amp I use...

I usually had the bass up pretty high maybe 3/4 up, mids and treble somewhere just past the halfway point for jamming/home playing. On gigs, I backed off the bass and bumped the mid some.
