dijos June 25th, 2010, 01:12 PM Hey all,
I think that I've finally arrived on the perfect pick for me, the dunlop tortex purple teardrop jazz picks. I thouught about buying some more, but after a really brief search, it appears that they may not be super easy to find. Anyway, what do you guys use, and how eie you come to jazz picks?

I've been meaning to try the V-picks.
tiktok June 25th, 2010, 01:40 PM I like the Dunlop Purple Tortex, or the red Jazz III XL if I want more definition.
P-Nutz June 25th, 2010, 02:15 PM ... 40 years ago when I first started playing, immediately to the red Jazz IIIs about ten years ago and have never looked back.
I like ... the red Jazz III XL if I want more definition.
+1 on that, although as of late I have been playing sans pick, though I haven't tried at a gig yet; I'm a little askeered.
Peace.
cousinpaul June 25th, 2010, 02:15 PM I'm not really a jazz player but have been using the red Dunlop Jazz II's since a buddy turned me on to one back in the eighties. I've noticed that they get better with age as the edges get beveled down a bit. I've also found the green Tortex M3's (same shape as a Jazz III) to be good for a little brighter sound.
JustPlayItLoud June 25th, 2010, 02:31 PM I use the Dunlop Jazz III. They're the black ones. I remember first hearing about them when I found out Eric Johnson used them. I looked them up and thought I could never get used to a pick that small. I always thought the 351 shape was the best. Then as I found out more and more people were using them and swearing by them, I decided to buy a pack.
I'm not going back. I don't know if I feel like I can play faster as some claim, but I feel like I have much better control over picking. And it's actually more comfortable to me than the standard 351 shape. And best of all, they're usually available at any store around here for a couple bucks a pack.
jimbach June 25th, 2010, 02:43 PM I recently switched to the red (1mm) Big Stubby.
swooda June 25th, 2010, 02:58 PM Thats what I use. Nylon and fat. I turn them around though and use the round corners to pick.....
middy June 25th, 2010, 03:05 PM I like the Dunlop Jazz III in Ultex.

Exactly what he said. And I use the red ones too.
binkydognose June 25th, 2010, 03:19 PM I've got to try those Jazz III's.
One of my sons got me some planet waves black ice picks last Christmas that I'm liking pretty well.
dconeill June 25th, 2010, 03:50 PM ... the dunlop tortex purple teardrop picks ... may not be super easy to find. ...
Try www.juststrings.com. Easy to find, just not easy to find locally, like anything that's out of the mainstream.
I use Dunlop Jazztones (#207), Dunlop teardrops (1.0 and 1.14mm), and came to them from Gibson Stars (shaped like Jazztone #207).
I liked the Gibsons very well, there's something about the material of which they're made that has a very nice, rather dark tone; however, they're no longer available and I've got about 200 left - should last me to my death.
When the Gibsons became unavailable, I tried several and got the closest tone from the Dunlop Jazztones, so I started using those.
When I want a much brighter tone I use the Tortex.
I never liked standard-shaped picks, so that's how I happened to start using the Gibson Stars.
octatonic June 25th, 2010, 04:09 PM I use the H3- which is the mini-tortex jazz 3 shape.
Used them for 20 years now- they are the business.
micpoc June 25th, 2010, 04:44 PM I like the Dunlop Jazz III in Ultex.
Me too. The Ultex material - which I guess is pretty similar to the Ultem picks made by Clayton - have a great tone and are super durable. Don't know exactly what kind of synthetic they are, but whatever it is, adding colors must weaken it, as Ultex/Ultem are virtually the same semi-clear dull amber shade.
Joe-Bob June 25th, 2010, 05:35 PM I use the purple GatorGrips for comping. The big stubby is good for single line stuff, but I don't like the noise they make against the strings for comping.

+1 I found these last year. The Fender teardrops in heavy work nicely too.

gitold June 26th, 2010, 06:26 AM Jazz III's since I first saw an add for them in the mid 70's.Here's a little known fact. They changed the material they made them out of in the 80's at some point.Eric Johnson asked them recently if they would make him some like the originals. You can buy them at M.F.They are different but not enough for me to order my picks special.
nickrom June 26th, 2010, 07:53 AM Pickboy J-Pick Jazz 1.5 mm for me. About 10 years ago I wanted to find a pick that worked for me and tried as many different types as I could find. I was working in Manhattan and walked down 48th St. on my way home every day, so there were plenty of shops with different choices. I settled on the Pickboy Jazz because it had a standard size vs. the smallness that jazz picks tend to have, the material felt right and I could get it in different depths from 1.0 to 1.5 mm.
For a while they were hard to find - but now I get them from SweetMusicShoppe on ebay. They have every size and I can buy in packs of 3 or 5, not a dozen. I have tried others since, but find I go back to this one. I use the 1.5, but I think I am going to experiment a little with the 1.0 and 1.2.
jazztele June 26th, 2010, 08:43 AM dunlop jazztone 205's. sound more like my thumb than any other pick.
fingers for comping though, unless I'm hanging with a big band or swing group.
sjhusting June 26th, 2010, 11:48 AM I moved to small heavy black Gibsons (Star?) right after I started playing, stuck with them for 30 years, then moved to the 3mm Dunlop Jazz Stubby for a few, then discovered the Dunlop 204/205s. Perfect. For now.

Larry F June 26th, 2010, 12:47 PM I use the black Jazz IIIs with a 3/8" hole for better grip and control.
I have a pick given to me years ago. It is black and similar in size to the Jazz III, although with a more rounded shape. It is has star in the middle and the words "Les Paul." Does this sound similar to the Gibson pick with the star mentioned above?
BluezyBruce June 26th, 2010, 01:04 PM I use a .88 Dunlop green tortex at a angle (like a brush) for easy attack, or just fingers. I think easy attack is a lot to do with sounding not so harsh, but then your whole set up is as well.
I also like to use older rounded nose pickes for their easy attack but the same kind.

Here's an unused Star between a heavily abused Dunlop 204 and a Jazz Stubby. I bought a lot of Stars in the 30 years I used them, the graphics changed over the years. This one is a late vintage, no star. Oddly enough they feel huge to me now.

The shape of the middle one is the same or very close to the Les Paul pick.
mastersja June 26th, 2010, 05:07 PM As a beginner, I just had way too much trouble with standard picks; simply too much real estate for me to keep in the correct position.
Told a friend, and he handed me a Clayton Acetal Small Teardrop, and that's been the ticket for me ever since.
I can barely play with anything else, so I buy them by the bag of 72, and even have a little leather pick carrier on my keychain so that wherever I am, I have me a Clayton .80mm teardrop with me.

Chris S. June 27th, 2010, 01:29 AM I've been using Fender 358 heavy picks for almost 40 years. This guy I knew named Danny Gatton showed me his, and seeing as how he could play a couple of good licks :!: I started using them myself. The only drag is that Fender recently stopped making them in white, which is the color I use; as Danny pointed out, the white ones are easier to find on a dark stage when you drop one. CS
Detman101 June 28th, 2010, 02:17 PM I use a Metal pick made out of a coin.
But my amp settings are really dark so it evens it out.

octatonic June 29th, 2010, 07:24 AM Thanks for the Ultex tips there guys- I bought a bunch today and they are great.
GregB July 4th, 2010, 02:20 PM Jazz III but not the black ones. Use the red ones. They sound and feel exactly the same but if you drop a black pick on a black stage it's gone.
hannigan July 4th, 2010, 03:04 PM Thanks for the Ultex tips there guys- I bought a bunch today and they are great.
Yup ultex rocks!
cochranmusic July 7th, 2010, 04:57 PM My search ended up with me taking an old busted up cymbal and making brass pics with the same shape as the dunlops. They give me such a clean natural sound and they don't wear as fast. I play all styles and use it for everything. It's been totally universal for my tastes. I struggled with the perfect pic search for years until I started making my own. I get what I want everytime.

You knew Danny Gatton ?!
He is pretty much the entire reason that I stopped flatpicking and started wanting to hybrid pick...
... although at the moment I am fooling with thumbpicks

I use these guys. Except the heavy version. When I was learning, I thought, these will be better for my really small hands (I was in 7th grade) and now, they're just what feels comfortable since I've been using them as long as I've been playing guitar.
Tele295 July 9th, 2010, 01:34 PM I like Fender teardrop 358s with my electrics. Got into them through Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan.
Charlesinator July 10th, 2010, 12:52 PM I've been using a red jazz III for a little while and love it. Went to the music store yesterday ... of course they didn't have any ... wound up getting some black Dunlop max-grip jazz III stiffos. Haven't tried them yet, but I am itching too.
Jimmy Dean July 11th, 2010, 05:05 PM I took lessons from a jazz & funk player in the mid 80's. He turned me on to Dunlop nylon picks because you can hold on to them. I have only used Dunlop nylon .73 mm since then for all styles.
bamarags2002 July 11th, 2010, 07:36 PM I've tried the HEAVY Fender 358's as well as the red Dunlop Jazz III's and was unsatisfied with both. I've recently bonded with a set of Planet Waves Black Ice picks that I got for free at Guitar Center w/ a recent purchase.
I find them to be a nice "in-between" of the other 2 picks mentioned... not as fat as the Jazz III but with more meat around the edges than the 358. They also have that "powdery" feel similar to the regular Dunlop Tortex picks.

slowpinky July 18th, 2010, 04:40 AM Anybody tried these?

Ive tried the delrin ones and I 've found them quite good for when you need that extra flexibility for strumming - ive ordered the gel and nylon ones to audition those too.
Im a bit of an Ultex JD III fan though.
Prison Rodeo August 18th, 2010, 09:00 PM Dunlop Tortex Teardrop 0.73. Why?
They're bright yellow, and easy to find when you drop them...
octatonic August 19th, 2010, 04:05 AM Either Tortex H3's or Ultex Jazz III's for me.
