High Pitched Whine Compressor Pedal

No, that's not the brand, its the sound i get when I dial up the Sustain knob.

I lashed out and bought a $49AUS Belcat CMP-509 compressor pedal on ebay. Three knobs, Attack, Level, Sustain, a battery + 9v DC power thingo, blue cammo colours paint job, LED.

It arrived today, along with a Behringer 9v universal Power Supply Unit. I hurriedly plugged the guitar into it, and played it with the battery that came with it.

Now, I was watching a Youtube demo and the guy said 'If you've got a good compressor, you don't even know when it's on'. Well, this one must be good then, because it makes little difference to my playing sound. There is a slight compression you can hear, but it acts more like a boost pedal, of which I already have one.

Anyway, I tried to power it via a daisy chain, and a high pitched whine flowed through my amp. The whine decreased when I played the strings, but was very noticeable at any volume. The whine got worse when I dialed up the Sustain knob.

I tried to power it with the daisy chain disconnected, as the only pedal drawing from the wall plug, but the whine is still there.

What can I do to make this sound disappear? I don't want to be chewing through batteries every week. Any suggestions?

Do you get this whine when knobs are set at unity gain?
Some times at more extreme settings these things can get noisy.

try taking the battery out when plugging it in via daisy chain or dedicated power supply and see if the whine is still there.

The whine starts with the sustain knob at about 8 o'clock. At 7 o'clock, it's dead quiet, as in no tone form the guitar to the amp. But even when the Level and Attack are at midday, it whines.

I tried that just after I posted the original post, and it made no difference. Still whiney. It sounds a little like an oscillating whine 'whiiiiiiiIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiIIII IIIIne'

How does it sound if you just run it on the battery and unplug the power supply? Do you have a different or better power supply than the Behringher you can try? I have had some noisy power supplies over the years...

Compressors will get noisy as you dial up the sustain, some get bad, some don't, but most have some type of noise as you crank up the gooey goodness control... My EH Soul Preacher was the noisiest comp I have ever heard. We're talking white noise..

Okay, I did some research and found out that the sound is referred to as hiss. With batteries it's silent, but I did find that when you push the level knob past midday and hit the strings with anything more than a light strum (and that is with one or more strings) it shoots a static into the amp.

Anyway, I emailed the seller, and he said that Belcat had told him that it needed a genuine Belcat power supply to eliminate the hiss. Something that would have been better to know BEFORE I BOUGHT IT.

I told the seller I didn't want to buy the power supply, and I don't want the pedal, and he offered a full refund in exchange for a positive feedback. I agreed.

Now, who makes a good compressor for less than $50AUS?

I get that high pitched whine from the top of the stairs when I decide to use my Super downstairs ;)
