Do you need one of these?

Which one? ISP Decimator? Boss? What do you like?

Well, you're first question was "Necessary?" so I'll answer that-

No.

Even when I am using single coils with a fairly noisy setup, I have never seen the need for a gate or reduction system. When you are actually playing notes or chords, the noise is not an issue, and will be there even with a gate. If it's letting music through, it's letting the noise through too. Fact.

When I'm not playing notes or chords, I just roll of the volume with my pinky. In between songs and whatnot. I've never had a real problem with noise.

If it's really bothering you, my best advice would be to invest in a quality sheilding job. Not being a smart aleck, it really makes a huge difference.

My experience with noise reducers/gates is that when you turn them up high enough to really do their job optimally, they screw up all other kinds of things with your sound and playing.

In short, I hate 'em!

No I have wasted money with them but usually the problem was with the buildings electrical grounding.
As I have aged I have acquired a taste for hum .
