Rory Gallagher.....wow.

The Teleist

Hi all.
Apoligies if I've posted this in the wrong forum again but there we go.

WOW. Rory Gallagher. I only disocovered his music last week, although I'd heard of him before, and since then I've listened to practically nothing else. What amazes me though is that he isnt (or wasnt?) at all well known! How can this be? How was he apparantly missed off the Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time? This is what first got me hooked:

I've been so into his music that even whilst the rest of our two great nations (?) were watching the world cup i was desperatley trying to learn Loanshark Blues, which I'm proud to say i now know all of except the solo.

and this is just great: DC6u1msbM6s

Anyhoo, if anybody can tell me any more information, if anybody's met him before at a concert or something. Nobody has made me want to listen to their music like this since I first listened to Eric Clapton. And I just wanted to share my joy at finding myself another guitar hero. RIP Rory.

Best concert I ever saw.

He is definitely missed.

Cheers,
Geoff

Jimi called Rory the world's greatest blues guitarist.

His recorded work does not do him justice, he was so very, very much better live.

For years in the early 80's I used Bullfrog Blues (Rory Live)as my wake up music. One of my chnaces in life lost not to see him in concert. Man that dude was good with all sorts of genres.

The guy who did a lot of the booking for a hall I worked at many years ago told me to make time to check out tonight's show.

He was looking out for me in a big way.

Rory was in the zone and tearing it up!

Guess I got lucky to see him play over a dozen times. I remember one night (Bracknell Sports Centre?) he did a one hour set - and two hours encore - and was still going strong when they knocked the power off.

The thing with Rory is that he really enjoyed playing, and he played to the crowd. He could play in several different styles and few people knew as much about the music as he did.

I only discovered him about 6 months ago (a huge feat for an American!) and I am absolutely bowled over. AMAZING guitarist/musician/entertainer and a big inspiration for me thus far.

16 is a great age to discover Rory's music .
I can tell you his music will be as great if you're 46 as it is now .
Watch the ' Irish Tour '74 dvd .
Live at the marquee '72 on YouTube !

One real bluesman maybe the best one there ever was to play the guitar .
Free's Koss and Canned heat 's ' Blind owl ' and Rory .
And Jimi , that's it . I think .

Rory is awesome. I first heard him when I bought the Live at Montreaux DVD. There's a whole bunch of concerts on that one. The forst concert from '74 (?) is just awesome - he's so humble, almost shy! Great stuff, he played from his heart. Check his bass player (Gerry Riley???) - he's a f*&^%ng animal!

How can this be? How was he apparantly missed off the Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time?

Because Rolling Stone, IMO, is a magazine not worthy of the paper it is printed on. If you want to read a music magazine I'd recommend Mojo. It's a far superior publication and the writers seem more intelligent and are hip to things that are happening outside of the mainstream.

To paraphrase the above using smiley's

Mojo = :cool:

Rolling Stone =

And well done learning 'Loanshark Blues' while watching the World Cup - You didn't waste your time at all!

Glad you are enjoying his music, The Teleist and others. I grew up listening to Rory. I saw him on The Midnight Special or something like like that. I bought '72 Europe Live and was hooked. There will never be another like Rory. A great loss.

BTW, yesterday was his death date. Gone at 47. Rory, Tommy Bolin and Jorma Kaukonen are my main inspirations for playing.

Don't worry, I'm 42 and discovered him only last year (because I live under a rock). I was watching a Youtube video of a guy doing a great cover of Bad Penny and subsequently Googled for Rory. Great musician. RIP

With so much music out there and so many musical trails to explore it's easy to overlook "essential" artists, so thanks for posting.

A truelly humble guy who loved the history of the blues, playing live, his
instruments and a pint.

The great players channel their Soul through their playing, Rory was one
of those. Those guys music seems to remain timeless. Simple and enjoyable
no hype, expensive film clips, studio enhancement to sound good.

When I want to recalibrate my ears I listen to Rory, Kossoff, Green, Hendrix
etc along with all those old blues guys.

Rory was the reason I started playing guitar at the age of 15.He was hugely important in Ireland as he was our first rockstar ( he predated Thin Lizzy and U2 by a long margin) and he never forgot to play regular gigs locally at the height of his fame.

I couldnt play like him at the time. I still cant even 30 + years later, and thats good as it forced me to discover my own approach( simple as it is )

Hes still a player whose recognizable within the first few notes and thats a great achievement

Hes also the only electric blues player I can think of who was just as convicing on acoustic

The way I discovered Rory was finding Live In Europe at my GF's house after a party. Needless to say, whoever left it didn't get it back!

I got to see him twice in concert, two of the best shows I've seen.

Morning all. I've just learnt the main parts to Bad Penny as well, which has made me feel very good indeed. Just those darn solos.... here's one of the coolest things I've seen for a long time: O7TNtgjFt9U the guy's having genuine fun, and it rubs off on the audience. GO RAGTIME!

Rory is the man! It is customary for a Fender fan, especially a Stratomaster, to become enamored by the Gallagher.

He played a Telecaster too (and a few other things including piano and sax).
