SixDemonBag June 14th, 2010, 04:55 AM Hi, i'm having issues with my DRRI. I swapped the stock eminence today for a Weber 12f150 50w 8 ohm. In changing the speaker I had to remove the chassis because it was in the way of one of the bolts...so I decided, since the chassis is out, i'd clip the bright cap too.
All went well 'till I turned it back on. I've lost 90% of my volume on every channel and every input. It reacts normally, and breaks up at around 5-6, but it super quiet...conversation loud. I've pulled it all apart again, checked all the wiring, re-plugged the tubes...changed cords/guitars etc. All the tubes are glowing. Rebiased the power tubes too.
Could it be a tube that co-incidentally failed when I took it apart? Would you get a volume loss across the board? I;m looking at replacing all the tubes.
Help!
xjazzy June 14th, 2010, 05:08 AM Try to re-attach the bright cap to see if gets back to normall. I don't think that's the problem but it's worth a try!
SixDemonBag June 14th, 2010, 05:13 AM can i add too:
- it's not scratchy at all
- it's not a thermal issue, volume doesn't change hot or cold.
- all the other controls work as normal, and the actually tone sounds pretty normal.
- I didn't discharge the caps when I took the chassis out and clipped c10
Does it matter what end of c10 I clipped?
xjazzy June 14th, 2010, 05:18 AM It doesn't matter.
Can you conect the old speaker to the amp just to be sure the speaker ain't the problem?
If you ever replace the speaker again you can just take the baffle out and leave the chassis on place.
SixDemonBag June 14th, 2010, 05:20 AM tried the speaker swap. no joy. same issues. :-(
xjazzy June 14th, 2010, 06:22 AM If I were you I would try to re-attach the cap just to be shure.
SixDemonBag June 14th, 2010, 06:26 AM If it was the cap though...wouldn't it just effect the Vibrato channel? Both channels are the same.
Would a pre amp/ power tube display these problems? thought tubes normally go crackly or hum/hiss when they fail.
It's like i'm running into a really good attenuator
dmarg1045 June 14th, 2010, 07:34 AM Since it failed after you clipped something, logic would dictate reattaching what you clipped to see if that's the problem. It doesn't really make sense to assume that it is not the problem.
milocj June 14th, 2010, 12:20 PM One other thing that I would check is to make sure that you didn't mess up your speaker cable when making the swap. Maybe you screwed up the wire connection to one of the spade connectors and you have minimal connection. Do you have another speaker cable that you could test with, or maybe some speaker wire/lamp cord and another 1/4" plug so you can make a new one?
You are plugged into the main speaker jack and not accidentally into the extension jack, correct?
laird June 14th, 2010, 12:36 PM Doesn't the DRRI have an internal and external speaker jack on the back of the chassis? If you're plugged into the external one and nothing's in the internal jack, that jack will short to ground and cause the quietness you're describing.

+1 Double check this!!!!
SixDemonBag June 14th, 2010, 10:48 PM Checked! Definately using the internal. There is a scratchyness when I fiddle with the speaker Jack though. I think the problem is there. Taking it to an amp tech
1962guitargeek June 15th, 2010, 03:09 AM methinks the leads are reversed at the speaker......
(ask me how I know!!!):mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

OK, how do you know? I don't see how that would make a difference on a single-speaker combo.
SixDemonBag June 15th, 2010, 04:47 AM yeah, they leads going to the speaker?...i've tried the, both ways. I'm sure it doesn't matter which way round they are does it?
sultan59 June 15th, 2010, 01:05 PM Not trying to be a dick here, but are you sure you clipped the right thing? Seems suspicious it starting messing up right after you clipped.
