Anyone try the Don Mare S Tele strat neck pickup and other strat like neck pickups for teles (like Harmonic Design, GFS fatbody, etc)?

What do you think?

Don Mare S-Telly pickup is great. It has a very nice Strat quality, but also sounds a bit Tele-like. It really is a great product.

Take it from a 20 year Strat player who switched to a Tele just over a year ago. The Fred Stuart Compact Wonder is the pickup you want.

How does the Mare S-Telly compare with the Twisted Tele?

To my ears, the S-Telly is a bit smokier and mellower. I prefer it actually.

Depends which Twisted Tele you're talking about. Apprently I got the Baja on eBay, and the S-Telly runs circles around it, to my dismay ... I would get one if I only ever used the neck pickup ...

Wow! That says it all. I have the MIM Baja Twisted Tele too. Well someday when I have the cash and the patience to wait 9 weeks. Don is sure worth it though - the Hayride set I bought from him last year is pure bliss.

hello folks, thanks for the kind words..

Customer produced "Hayride clips" may be over on youtube,

FWIW:
I did get my wait times _way down_ here, just 5 to 6 weeks on any new orders,,,
( just doing a little roumor control ) - My stint as Guitar Guru For all the new Ernie Ball Guitars to be used on tour with Sublime-With -Rome, caused me to fall behind here, and my waits hit an ugly 9 to 12 weeks,
This DAMAGED my business by 50% as it curbed off future sales. I wished I'd never had tried to help insure the band used those Ernie Ball-Musicmans, cause after loosing 3 weeks working on those guitars day and night and chasing the band around to fix any problems or rework those guitars to perfection!
- the band bailed out on the Musicmans anyways !! (urrr!) and went over to a Fender endorsement deal -

So, all that work went right down the drain for me and a big loss for Ernie..... and for the last 3 months my business suffered the consequences.. about a 50% fall off on orders due to complaints all over the internet about 12 week wait times...

So please pass it on that my waits are back to normal here now, ok - 5 to 6 weeks - thanks BigDog!!

just got a fred stuart compact wonder and it is actually quite similar to the mare Stelly i used to have. the compact wonder is a bit clearer, but still very robust. it also seems to respond to player's dynamics a bit better than the stelly. the stelly, on the other hand, has the traditional chrome looks and still sounds awesome. either pickup is great, and either pickup is gonna have you waiting for a bit.

Hi, Vangaurd thanks for the kind words..

On my newer S-Tellys they now all have a really Transparent Nickel Silver Cover,
Those older ones of mine all had Brass with chrome plating...

...I still fear sending out any non-covered Teles, because of string snag or when I get 2 layers of protective tape on them they get stuck in the pickgaurd and wont adjust up...

props to Fred for getting a non covered Strat Like T neck out there for folks..

I wonder if hes used taller magnets to allow more area for protective tape??

yeah, the whole no cover thing had me a bit shaky when i was installing the pickup. it seems safe enough, though.

another thing to mention: in my experience, don mare is VERY good at customer service if something ever goes wrong.

I've got a hamel tall neck, don's stelly, the original '59 front tele pickup, old barden, tried twang king, a budz tall and a voodoo 60's wound "more strat like" and prefer the stelly. The hamel tall neck comes in second. I like the low end and girth of the stelly better than the tall neck. The hamel tall neck is a little louder and clearer, and you have to crank the low side of pup to get enough low end out of it. But it's attack and volume just about can't be beat.

You can't go wrong with Don Mare's pickups. I have his S-tele and Tall neck pickups and I slightly prefer the Tall neck because it has a more traditional Tele sound. Clear, strong , and just the right amount of high end.
