Capacitor for tone pot - 1984 MIJ Tele

Hi

really not very knowledgeable about this type of thing, but i've had it suggested that a new capacitor for my tone knob will help increase the variance of tone possibilities in this guitar. Now a turn of this knob seem to do very little for the tone unless it is turned all the way down. This is definitely unlike other electrics I've tried

Right now everything is still original. Any tips on what types of capacitors i should try?

Alternatively, set me straight if I am way off on this idea...

Thanks

J.D.

You probably have a .047 capacitor in there now. Try a .033 or .022, that should even out the spread a little more. I use a .015, going to a smaller cap narrows the range a bit but evens out the spread, IMO.YMMV.

+1

I myself don't use the tone control much so when I do, I just like a subtle change, like for rhythm. I use a .015µF on most of my Tele's. As far as one guitar to another, for the most part you should dial the tone in with the amp anyway, and use the tone on the guitar for a little variation when you need it........................IMHO.

See what you have now. The larger the value (bigger number cap), the darker/faster the tone will get muddy(darker) as you turn the pot down.

.047 - tone pot on 3-1 = VERY DARK vs. wide open
.022 - tone pot on 3-1 = slightly darker vs. wide open

If it doesn't seem to do anything much now, there must be a very low value on it or something is wrong with the pot. Could be the cap and/or ground is bad too. Get some at Radio Shack, they are fine........ 2 for $1.49. Hook one up with test leads and try different values.

As long as you have it apart, clean the pots out with contact cleaner.
